Deer damage, worse than ever! Will the tree survive?

Hello everyone ...

I've been managing deer issues on my fairly new trees (which average 6 feet tall or so) with mixed success. The worst that's ever happened is the stripping of foliage on a branch or three, or the munching of tender new shoots.

Well, tonight i discovered my Whitney crab in a devastated state. The top few branches are unmolested, but there's only a scant few branches remaining on the rest of the tree, with those being severed and stripped quite severely.

I'd say about half the tree is gone.

Tomorrow, i plan to prune the tree up to try to recover some semblance of "shape." But i feel like i'm trying to cut a bald man's hair. There's a limit to what you can do with something that's just not there!

I realize it's difficult to assess without a visual (it's too dark out to get a picture right now), but from my description:

Do you think my tree will recover?

If so, how much has it been set back?

Should i remove the few remaining apples so the tree can put all its energy into recovery?

I love the deer, i really do. But this one sure did pluck my nerves tonight.
