Not sure there is wide spread agreement on how to grow LB, Mkiker.

It is commonly grown in water, but some report better results in a potting mix (and some don't). It is commonly grown in very low light, but mine is about 6 feet from a south window.

Some fertilize, some do not.

I don't think it's all that sensitive to chlorine/flouride in water. Reason I say that is I see them in Chinese restaurants all the time and I can't imagine they are being 'properly' cared for. I use distilled water for mine, but I use that for all my houseplants that I grow in hydroculture.

I don't think there is anything you can do to get one to grow quickly indoors. When a friend asked me about getting one my advice was 'buy it at the size you want it'.

I agree with justaguy; there are differing opinions on how to best care for this plant. I have a tall vase filled with Dracaena Sanderiana plants (trendy name: lucky bamboo) and about the only thing I advise is to change water regularly for oxygen levels to remain healthy. Once a week is great, every two weeks is fine and once a month is a must. My plants also receive some morning sun, which they don't mind at all, and I fertilize them 2 or 3 times during the spring/summer season. A have a couple of friends that grow them in soil with great results.

The only thing I can advise is put some aquarium charcoal in the vase. But if I were to get one, I'd just pot it in a pretty pot and use gravel as a top dress. It would be easier in the long run.

Well to me potting it would make it too much like my Dracana to be any fun. I wanted it to be like a stick growing in a bud vase sort of thing. I'll probably end up talking myself into getting one.

I want to put it under artificial light. The light is enough to keep a D. Marginata alive (not growing really, but alive and healthy looking) and an aspidistra is very happy (growing like a weed). It would get light almost 24 / 7. I wouldn't want it to grow much, just stay alive and pretty.

Also if I get it I think I'll give it just city water for a while. I may let it sit to de-chlorinate though. Bottled water could get costly over time. I use distilled water to mist some plants though so I can give it a 50/50 mix.
