yard long beans grow but won't flower and won't produce
Comments (8)I have the exact problem - vigorous vines but no flowering for 2 years now in the same location that 3 years and before I had many beans. My treliis is actually an arbor than can be walked under @ 7 feet high. My pH is 7-7.5, micronutrients are not lacking, N is low but P &K are excessive. Am adding sulfur to lower pH but suspect the problem is something else. I've checked into toxicants from tree roots (not too far away) but not sure on that. I regularly add hardwood leaf compost mixed with grass clippings so am wondering if that is a factor. Sunlight is 6 hours a day so don't think that's the problem. We had severe Spring droughts for the past 2 years, but I've watered every other day though wonder if I was getting enough down for uptake during the bloom period. Temperatures were excessive - mid 90's- so am suspecting that as the main culprit. Am to the point of pruning the layering vines in hopes of getting results when things cool in the Fall. I've typically had excellent blooming & bean production just before the first frost. Other experiences? Advice?...See Morehelp with bulbs/lilies? why won't they DIE?
Comments (2)I can take a pic of the next one I pull, which I'm sure is there now, but it sounds like each time i see one I'll just dig it up, making sure i get the bulb. But will it "spread" or stay contained in the bulbs that I yank/dig up ? I know the wild iris -the ones with purple orange top are everywhere and impossible to kill. but hopefully I can keep these under control. :[ (I had to dig out a 5' long by 4' deep to get agave out--even a piece would restart a plant. now THAT was a nightmare!) I do remember them when I moved in, no flowers at all. Bright green. stood about 1 foot tall. and obviously you are right about the fabric blocker. these things are coming up under the bark, and on north side of house, so I guess the buggers don;t even need sun to rise from the deep. (I'm sure they are a beautiful plant, just NOT in my azaleas and camellias )...See MoreWhy won't my pink hydreangeas flower?
Comments (1)They have never flowered in three years in a row? 1. If you are doing some pruning after the shrubs have created flower buds, you might be prunning off next year's blooms. This mainly affects hydrangeas that bloom on 'old' wood. Otherwise, I would look at Mother Nature. 2. Some hydrangeas planted out of zone will require winter protection and, if they do not get it, they may produce new stems from the ground up every year, with nice dark green leaves... and with no blooms. 3. Finally, hydrangeas planted in dense shade MAY have a hard time flowering but this really varies; some do well and others struggle to bloom. You may have to get a variety that blooms on 'new' wood. But before doing that, do you know the name of the pink hydrangea variety that does not bloom?...See MoreWhy won't my jalepenos bare fruit?
Comments (4)Likely, in your area it is the heat and probably low humidity. They do best in warm but not overly hot and higher humidity conditions. We had a string of high 90's and lower 100's and my plants started dropping blossoms right and left. I find that temps in 80 to 95 degree range are great for peppers in the flowering stage especially. Did your plants produce blooms at all? If not, it is likely a nutrient deficiency and something a little higher in "P" (Phosphorus) rating. If they did produce blooms but they just fell off after a few days or more, then it is likely the heat. In the case of heat, assuming they are in containers, on the hotter days, put them in a place they get shade most or all day but still get good surrounding light. Good luck and dont just throw a bunch of fertilizer at your plants or you will cause more problems than you can possibly sort out. Use them sparingly. Too much is as bad or worse than not enough.
