Duck tales from Goldenpond

Well my ducklings are growing.We like to get them all feathered before we let them out in the pond so it is quite a chore. They need to be too big for crows and hopefully most hawks.Here is an update on there progress

The reddish one was the BIG ugly duckling who broke his leg. Aint he purty now? And his leg is almost all better!

The short brown one is Napoleon and the dark brown is Rambo Man Duck.The black one is Jemima Puddle Duck.

the oldest grandson named this one ZoE after a stuffed Zebra that I bought him. His name is Ethan but we call him E so thats why ZoE has a capital E!

This one is Lucky Lou because of what appears to be a lucky rabbit foot attached to her head! These ducks with pom poms are called Crested.Lucky Lou(or LouLou) can twirl that thing around in a circle like a hula hoop!

If you have not heard about Jinxie losing her mate or how we got the ducklings you may want to search the other duckling posts.
Jinxie had been so lonely it would break our hearts as she squawked so loudly searching for her Felix. We read that ducks should not be raised alone so we now have 11 ducklings hoping some day she will accept them.
She has chased away many wild ducks who landed on our pond and then,,,,,,,,,, along came Ronnie.
Cormo Ronnie as we call him. A cormorant is in the pelican family and is not loved by people who raise fish as the little devils will dive,disappear beneath the water and eat tons of your fish. They are also a protected species.
For some reason Cormo Ronnie and Jinxie have hit it off. They sit on the bank almost all day, eating and swimming a bit,napping a bit. It has been good company for Jinxie but I am sure our fish numbers have gone down considerably.

Cormorants spread their wings to dry, Jinxie flaps hers but can't keep them open that long.
But here she is trying!

It won't be long and the ducklings will be able to take there rightful place on the pond and we do not know what will become of Cormo Ronnie but we shall see!!!!

They are so sweet...Thank you for shareing your ducky family...I love ducks, but DH won't let my have any here. To many coyotes....

shawnamaverick You should probably get some duck feed as ducks require different nutrition than other birds. Provide some small gravel for digestion. With our farmed ducks we have the heat lamp at about 90 degrees F the first week and decrease it by 5 degrees per week. It may be illegal where you are to keep a wild duck so you should check into that. Duck will need fresh water every and food that meets it's nutritional need. Depends on the type of duck, but if it's a water fowl it will likely roost on the ground so just a safe place for night. You may find that the duck will not accept the chukar. Ducks imprint very strong on what they see when they hatch. In this case it believes it is a duck. If it was hatched out by humans it would believe it was a human. Ducks can be very aggressive so be prepared for that. You may find you have a loudly quacking baby on your hands for a while, they are flock animals.

GoldenPond, Yep, your on the right tract. I don't let my ducks out untill 8:30-9:00am, and their eggs are layed. Sounds like we have the same set-up. Sometimes they decide to stay out all night(naughty little kids) and I hear the girls 1/2 to an hour after sunrise laying their eggs under my bedroom window. That makes up for staying out all night because......We LOVE Those Eggs!!!!!!!

How sweet! I love it! It is funny but when kids have a great imagination, anything can be fun. Geez, I remember pretending to be a horse and jumping over obstacles made from boxes, wastebaskets, anything I could get my hands on in the yard. I would set up the obstacles like the jumps at a horse show. Other times I was a barrel racer. Or we played stay away from the sharks. The living room floor was the ocean and the dogs were the sharks. I had to jump from one piece of furniture to the next to stay away from the dogs or *gulp* swim across the floor (run) before the sharks got me. And we used to play basketball with a Nerf ball and the lampshades were the hoops. Or we'd take blown up balloons and try our best to keep them in the air (I broke a window with my head once when I got a little too exuberant). Sometimes the simple stuff is the best! Love the sweet story of your grandson and Mingo. Thanks so much for sharing it!

Okay, here is MY bobcat story. You all probably know that I have spent many, MANY hours hiking, birding and canoeing in the Florida wild places. Ever since I was in my 20's, I have wanted to see a bobcat. However, apparently bobcats have never wanted to see ME. No matter where I was or who I was with, or how often bobcats had been spotted in the area previously, years and years and years went by, and I never saw a single one. Once when I was birding in the very early hours of the morning on Anhinga Trail in the Everglades, I saw a Florida panther strolling down the road in front of my car. She stopped and watched us long enough for me to get out my telescope (or stellatope as Tabby calls it) and enjoy some close up views of her. I mean, I saw one of the rarest animals in Florida, if not in the country, but I still hadn't seen a bobcat. (Which are quite plentiful, btw). Fast forward a few years and I'm approaching 60 with no bobcat viewings to look back on fondly. After walking many a mile in the woods and swamps and fields of the state...not a one. But one afternoon, driving home from Publix, down a urban road in Lake Mary, next to a subdivision, just past a church, a mile from a school, nowhere near a woods...there, streaking across the road in front of my car was...yes...a BOBCAT!!! My one and only glimpse of one was practically in the Publix parking lot! I have to say I almost ran the car off the road in excitement. Boy, if I thought I could entice BOBCATS into my backyard, I would tie the squirrels to tiny little stakes as lures!! They are beautiful animals, and so clever and crafty. It is so sweet you sharing your duck and duckling story with us! I like the updates too. You could write a book about this all--a childrens book - about love and loss and new found friends. Loving what others do and just living life after a loved one has gone. Jinxie is living again! We'll see how she does once the lil' ones invade her getaway space. :-) Thank friend like Cormo Ronnie for helping her through~

A very fancy bunch of ducks, get a kick out of the top knots of the crested ones! The ugly 1 is quite handsome now!! Interesting freckles on the 1 . So many varieties! Amazing!So along came Ronnie & now Jinxie is trying to be like him, that is so funny but seems to be cheering him up!! Ronnie will probably run/fly away with all those ducks to deal with, or he may be their leader!! Can't wait to see what happens next!! Jan

I'm always glad to read your duck updates! They are really growing quickly too! Love the ones with the puffballs on their heads...I'd never seen that kind before! I'm glad Jinxie has a friend, but I know what you mean about your fish! Thanks for keeping us updated on their progress...always a joy to read!

Keep the updates coming! I agree about the book. Cormo ronnie and Jinxie's friendship shows you don't have to be just like someone else to value and appreciate them!
