June Jinxie and Ducklings update

We decided to take the ducklings out for some fresh air and in hopes that Jinxie would befriend them. When they all fit into this laundry basket and she got quite curious

The little ducklings have been eating their way to adulthood.

I had some sugar baby melons in my garden and wondered if they might enjoy them.HA.

OH the sloshing and slurping noises!

they devoured them til the rind was paper thin!

Then along with ducky food we let them try a few

Brandywine tomatoes

Definitely a hit!

Jim built them an outdoor pen for the daytime and guess who got a bit curious

at night they still go into the garage pen. Justin Tyler found a butterfly net and decided to try to catch them

Then he tried to catch himself!

What cute pictures. I hope Jinxie befriends them soon, so she won't be lonely any more. You can send the little duck with the black dots on his yellow head to Phoenix. LOL

HI, Smittee! We'd love to have you join us but it would be quite a drive. A quick google search indicated 186+ miles from Auburndale to Jacksonville. About three hours according to google. ON THE OTHER HAND - groups like us are all over the map! I'm sure you could find a plant swap almost any weekend that would be a comfortable trip for you. sue, i'll be turbo grading on monday and tuesday, final papers as they write their final exams and then the exams as they come in, then the greenhouse on wed, then thursday my lit papers are due so a final batch of turbo grading, greenhouse friday sat and sunday, and grades are due monday so somewhere before then i have to add up all of those numbers. that will probably be my friday night, sitting on the couch, watching the thursday night tv shows online, and cursing at the calculator. i have done nothing in my garden un a long time, no transplanting of seedling yet. don't even have a plot dug up. rain rain rain. after next week, though, if no one else signs up for my 102 comp class (which would be BAD. if you know anyone desperate enough to pass comp 2 that they will come to waynesburg to do it, let me know LOL) i will only be working at the greenhouse until the last week of june, when i do my week long nature lit class. hopefully i can get everything planted out before the heat of july kicks in!!

Dearest Remy, my heart is hurting for you about Creton. I know that you will be giving him lots of extra love and attention. I was in your situation a little over a year ago with my kitty, Kiki. I cried lots of tears, too. I DO want to thank you for the treMENdous box of plants that you sent. Again, I am just bowled over by your giving spirit. Roses! Oh, how I love roses! I have a special area that I have set aside for roses. It's a sort of memory garden to honor the wonderful lady who sold us our piece of heaven. Mildred, our landlady when we farmed, sold us land that had been in her family for 100 years. People just don't do that here in Iowa, but she did, and we will always love her for it. She was a "rose" person. Thus, my rose garden. Thank you for the roses Belle de Crecy and Rosa Glauca. Thank you also for these: -Campanula persifolia-pics of it look so pretty. -Iris flavescens-another beauty! -Geranium 'Biokovo'-I have started collecting these kinds of geranums and have them planted on the west side of our home on a small slope. -Salvia transylvanica-the blue color in pics is my favorite color of blue -Candy lilies-anxious to see color(s) -Veronica gentianoides-another pretty color -Sedum album-I looked this one up and the plantfiles called it "Chunky Fingers!" LOL That's just how it looks, too. -Tradescantia 'Bilberry Ice'-I don't have this one and have been wanting it. Thanks! -Euonymus--looks very interesting. Can't say that I have seen it but am looking forward to what it will look like. -And the goody packet of BEAUTIFUL Angel stickers! I LOVE them!!! Gardeners hand lotion, Spring Cherry flavored green tea, and I thought it was GREAT that you sent the single serving packet of Tide!!! LOLOL Just what I need to wash my dirty, stinky gardening clothes in. Remy, you have again blessed me with more of your garden. "You" will be all over my place, and I love that thought. Looks like I never updated my progression after July, so here's the rest of the year, now that frost is upon us: April 29: May 3: May 17: May 26: June 4: July 15: July 27: August 20 (After a large branch smashed it pretty badly during a storm): September 16: October 13: Since houzz won't let me put any more photos in this post, I think I'm done for the year. It's all over but the cutting back, anyway. It was a bad year for deer and a lot of plants got munched before they bloomed. With that and the endless cycle of rain and heat in our area, the garden wasn't looking it's best. But I still had bloom from March through at least November (assuming all the blooming plants don't suddenly die in the next four days) and that's not bad for a still novice gardener! I am excited for the thousand bulbs I planted in my little patch of woodland to come up next spring, and I know I will be digging and rearranging the front yard in the spring, too. I have really enjoyed everyone's progressions, and am very inspired to keep "biggering" my garden!

Awwwwwwww ... they are all so cute! Including the little blonde with under the net. he-he I just love them all and don't know how Jinxie can possibly resist them. I see she had to come investigate them while they were in the basket. TFS!

Well, little kids can be annoying until they get older and "interesting" as some people, er, I mean, ducks think! :-)It's so good to see her interest start to peak now that they are getting a bit older. WOW, they sure devoured that FRESH produce! I think Jinxie is getting herself back. It would be nice if she could find a new mate eventually.

Awwwwwwwwwww, so cute! the babies are getting big, how old are they now? I fed mine lettuce leaves and they went crazy over them.

One sadder note. The biggest duckling managed to get a broken leg. I got on line and read where this is a very common injury.Their legs are so tiny compared to those hefty bodies and the other ducklings seem to stampede.Being the slowest of the bunch I guess he just couldn't get out of their way.We have put a makeshift splint on his leg using plastic knives and foam.
He is eating, drinking and hopping so who knows?

I have just loved hearing about your ducklings and Jinxie! So cute watching them slurp up the watermelon! I'm sorry to hear about the broken leg, but hopefully it will heal and he will be good as new! Thanks for keeping us up-to-date in their growing!

Golden you have enough leading acters for a children's book. How adorable and how good you are to them.

My grand daughter used to try and teach me a children's game-"there she goes again off on a senior ramble" ;0) ,which I never did get the hang of, called "DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE". Since I can not even remember the rules of the game, I changed it. Everytime a flock of geese fly over the yard, I yell "DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE". Then Hubs and I smile as it makes us think of Grandbabylove. It is probably interpreted as insanity or 2nd childhood by the neighbors learing out of their windows though. Anyhoo, they are all ducks to me until they HONK.

Oh what precious pictures! so sorry to hear about the big "ugly duckling". He's by favorite. I hope Jinxie befriends them. Looks like she's heading in that direction.
