You're running a bit late, as risk of frost will be here in ~60 days or so. Here on the Front Range, my lettuce, kale and cabbage transplants are already in the ground, short-maturity greens going in ~weekend or two. I expect to cover with hoops for ~2-3-4 weeks to keep the season going, 'til around Thanksgiving. I have coldframes too, which go out after frost hits.

I have carrots, lettuce, spinach and peas coming up now. All of these will live through a bit of frost.

I haven't started yet - but will be doing so with 3 low hoops on the beds.....

I honestly have been too hot and miserable to do anything out there but keep things alive...and what with those tiger mosiquitos biting me at 5am....it's been tough to do any gardening at all....

Hoping for a nice weekend in a few with temps in the 70's (do those exist?) to get everything squared away....

Want the brassicas under covers from the get go....

between the heat sink that is chicago, and the moderating effects of lake michigan I think fll will be warmer than usual....what do you all think?

will the earth take longer to cool down after this super hot summer?

It is too late for broccoli, collard, lacinato, carrots. it is about right or slightly late for bok choi, kale, turnips (mine are in the ground, but as I pull the onions next week I will be seeding kale in there). It is early for hakurei turnips, broccoli raab, and arugula. Of course kale, lacinato, turnips, rutabaga and collards are for the winter garden. In the Fall, I still have chard, komatsuna, chicory, bok choi, arugula, mustard greens, and beets. Fall and winter garden should be 50% or more of the area.

I have carrots in already, peas in already, plan to seed some kohlrabi this weekend, and of course, radishes are always an easy 3 week crop for fall. I am thinking about some spinach as well.

Well, I always have great intentions for my fall garden but as usual the most I get planted are beans and onions.

I plan for peas, radish, lettuces and beans using low tunnels if necessary. But then between the weeds and deer flies, my plans go out the window!

I have 18 flats of Broccoli, Cauliflower, Napa Cabbage, Green Cabbage, Red Cabbage, Bok Choy, Lettuce, Hanging basket cherry tomatoes, and Kale. I have direct seeded 1000 square feet of carrots(1,150 row feet) in the last week and have 76 tomato plants, in a high tunnel, starting to bloom. 350 zucchini and cucumber plants are just starting to bloom or produce and I put in a last planting of zucchini in another movable building. I started one 30 foot bed of Green onions. I will also be planting another 2, 200 square feet beds of them soon. Green beans were planted 3 weeks ago and are looking good.

I need to start another 8-12 flats of lettuce, cabbage, kale, and Bok Choy over the next few weeks.

We need to start direct seeding radishes and turnips in a week.

This fall and winter we will be growing on about 6,500 square feet of covered space. 5,000 of this will be covered all winter. I am also going to try some low tunnels this year.

Just some of our plans. We will sell at farmers markets until Halloween, then online market weekly until Christmas and then every other week in January-April.

I obviously need to follow Jay's lead........ :) Thus far, my "fall garden" is a bigger bust than my summer. Fortunately, I'm a (retired) hard headed German that doesn't understand the meaning of "exercise in futility"

I'm a newbie to fall gardening, but I'm going to try it just for kicks. I am planting some short-season, short-vine peas, plus lettuce and salad greens. I just can't seem to grow root veggies, so I'm leaving those alone until someone can teach me what I'm doing wrong.;-) (I suspect that the heavy clay/mucky soil of a former swamp isn't helping.)

Last week I planted a bed of bush snap beans and will plant another this weekend...if they produce, fine, and if they get frosted, they'll still enrich the soil -- win-win either way.
