So geez, I have some nice big honeydews, maturing well. I go out today and see that one has been chewed on. A squirrel, no doubt. It excavated a one-inch diameter area to a depth of half an inch. So what is my strategy to save that melon? Leave it alone? Will the excavated area attract bugs? Some sealant? Paint? Glue some plastic wrap bandage over the wound? I've now put small paper bags over all my melons to discourage the pests.

Seriously, a swab of varnish will probably dry hard before it penetrates the melon.

Bummer! Well, if nothing else it got you to protect the rest of them. Not sure if there's anything you can do to help the damaged one. Maybe someone else knows a trick.

The best way, IMO, is to heal itself in the air.

I have a suggestion to protect them: wrap them loosely in nylon tulle. I dont think rats, squirrels will mess with that. They dont like to get tangled with the tulle and will go somewhere else.
