Question about pot size for climbing Philodendron

Just picked up three small vining Philodendrons - two "red emerald" and one verrucosum. Each one is about 14" high with two or three leaves. All are in 4-5" pots.

I want to train these guys to climb up a 7-8 foot tall branch (it's actually a dead corn plant cane with three branches). The cane is currently in a 16" pot.

Now, my question is... Should I move the cane to a smaller pot right now to accommodate these small Philos? Or is it ok to plant them in a pot that large? Or would it be advisable to scoop the soil down to a low level and plant the Philos there, and as they grow, add soil to cover the bottoms of the plants and fill the pot?

Anyone?
