Edamame- How long from pod to picking?

I am growing edamame for the first time this year (MoonCake PVP from Southern Exposure).

They have been growing well all summer and are now about 5-6 feet tall. A few bunches of small flat pods just appeared today.

My question- Does anyone have experience with roughly how long it will take them to be ready to pick from this point?

Everything I've read says to watch them carefully because they can get woody if you wait too long, but they don't give a range of days for how long that might take.

I'm going to be out of town for two weeks with my parents house-sitting. My mom will water for me and pick ripe tomatoes but she is a self-proclaimed "plant killer" and she's afraid to do anything else.

I'm hoping someone here can give me an estimate so I know if they might take a full two weeks to be ready or if I need to enlist my sister to come and pick them while I'm gone.

Most of the plants do NOT yet have pods, just flowers. Maybe two-three plants have a few clusters of almost completely flat baby pods.

Any experience with timing?

I don't grow the very often and I am not familiar with that variety. I grew Tohya this year and it took about a month from flowers to edible pods.

No way to insure it as there are simply too many variables but from what I have read Group VI (your variety) is approx. 2.5 to 3 weeks between pod formation and maturity. However if your plants are already 6' tall something is out of whack (likely insufficient sun or over-crowding) and that will delay them more.

Im not the best person to answer this, not many of mine made it to harvestable last time, but when the pods are filled out, but before they start drying. It wont hurt to try a few if you think there close. Better a bit young than having to cook them forever! good luck!

Undoubtedly someone will say that you can cut more than 1/3 off - they usually do when I say to leave 2/3's of the plant. Leaving 2/3's of the living plant is the rule of thumb for pruning and herb harvesting. Mint will survive a harder cutting than 1/3 off, but it will take it longer to bounce back and regrow enough for you to harvest from again. You're doing the right thing. Start small and slow with your harvesting. You'll get the feel pretty quickly as to how much you can take and how your plant will respond. And if you start slowly in regards to harvesting, you can learn without any of those, "oh, I shouldn't have done that" moments. FataMorgana

photo? Not sure what you are referring to as a seed pod. These trees make hanging inflorescences, which eventually develop into a huge number of red fruits, which have a single seed inside each one nearly as large as the fruit (entire fruit is a little smaller than your typical marble). If you peel away the thin soft layer of fruit, you will find what is the seed pod inside (a small, spherical brown nut) and inside that is the seed. These pods do NOT open on their own- they germinate from within the pods (or sometimes in an animal's gut). Usually there are many many hundreds of fruits per inflorescence. So not sure what you are referring to when you say you see two seed pods.....?

I'm in zone 9a but right on the fringe of 9b, on the gulf coast of Alabama. We tend to have a quite long growing season, so I'm hoping that my peppers are ripe, before its time to bring the plants inside for the winter (usually after Halloween!). My brother-in-law & I were feeling adventurous the other night, and decided to sample some of my black pearl pods. They haven't started to turn yet, but overall the flavor wasn't too bad. We both agree that the black pods taste similar to a jalapeño, both in flavor & heat. I also tried one of the still purplish-green mystery pods, and was hit by intense heat (much more than habanero) with the initial flavor of a bell, so overall, I'm quite impressed by this mysterious plant. One of my reapers is shedding petals & now has its 1st pods, so I'm uber excited.... Can't wait to sample these!!!!

Good article, but it is for oil soybeans not edamame. Tohya also gets a bout 12-18 inches at maturity.

Thanks for the information! All I need is two weeks so it looks like I might make it home in time to harvest them.

Dig dirt- according to Southern Exposure, Moon Cake is unusually tall and 5-6 feet is normal. They seem really healthy.

I can't wait for steamed edamame and a beer!
