Standard Pest ID and Protection

We are relatively new to fruit gardening and have a number of trees in our orchard at this point (apple, cherry, pear, plum, peach, nectarine). We were wondering what the standard home orchard pest traps would be, and standard systems for pest identification. We have a few leaves with holes in them but nothing extreme. One of our three year old trees was almost entirely destroyed last year by some pest, but we were out of the country and came back to see the after-effects. We would like to stay on top of things this year, and so we are doing walk arounds and close inspections every few days, but still are struggling to see what is eating the leaves.

Is it too late for moth traps? What kind of sticky tape etc do you all use?

And, we have a few light red ants on our trees - i don't think they are the fire ants. Are ants generally bad for fruit trees?

Bumping to see if anyone has ideas, and to emphasize the question about how dangerous ants are to fruit trees.

Lots of pests. Not sure exactly where you are, but i'll run down the ones I know of and have dealt with...

1. Plum Curculio (these are everywhere east of the Rockies from what I know)... they make crescent shaped slits in almost any fruit and lay eggs. They love stonefruit without fuzz the most (nectarines, plums, pluots)...then apples, peaches, pears. Outside of apples and pears (which will be deformed), the fruit will fall from the tree with larvae inside that crawl out into the soil and start the process over next year. You need to spray an insecticide or at least SurroundWP for protection.

2. Japanese Beetles ==these come out in summer, seem to be heavier in some areas then others...some years are worse. They will do a ton of damage to foliage. Seem to really prefer sweet cherries, plums.

3. Borers (lots of them, covering almost all trees types). They can kill young peach trees/i assume other trees too. Trunk sprays/traps.

4. Stinkbugs? (not around here......yet)

5. Rose Chafers (similar to Japanese beetles, live in sandy soils, annoying, but not as destructive as the Japanese beetles).

6. SQUIRRELS!!! if you have these around, you have trouble. They love almost ripe peaches...apples, pears, etc etc...pluots! Trap or shoot (if possible)...

7. Birds...around here they peck apples...they also swarm cherries.

8. deer (don't have them here, don't want them).

9. Humans (they steal!).

Most sprays seem to cover most pests, but you have to read the labels. You have Pyrethrins, NeoNics (systematics), Carbamates and Organophosphates... along with a few others (SurroudWP/Neem)..

Trust me...it takes some time to identify what you are dealing with and how to respond. You might think you have things under control and the next morning a fat grey squirrel has a prize Flavor King Pluot up on the power line gnawing away.

Since I planted apples/peaches back in 2005...over the years I think the worst "pest" is the squirrel. The smaller insects are easy to control *if you get the right spray at the right time and reapply when needed*.

I would like you to tell me if i need to do any preventive treatments of organic pesticides No. Treatments, even organic ones, can kill just as many beneficial insects as they kill pests. The beneficial insects outnumber the pests 9:1. So you never spray until you know for sure that you have a pest problem and what the specific pest is. There is no blanket treatment for ALL pests so the guidelines are first ID the pest and second, use the pesticide that is specifically recommended for that pest. Should i use stimulators like propolis and strength mixtures? No. Those have no role. Why would you use those in a vegetable garden? Dave

Looks like boxelder bug. A pain in the posterior. Somewhat hard to control with purchased pesticides, but a direct hit with 1 tablespoon of Dawn detergent (or others) in 1/2 gallon of water will get them. The Dawn breaks down the protective oil on their exoskeleton and causes them to dehydrate. Turns them to toast and doesn't screw with the environment. hortster Here is a link that might be useful:

Arrrggh. If it is snails, then I guess my incredibly intense usage of two different kinds of bait is not working. I thought that might be the case because I have found a random snail a few times now, which I throw away, but if you find one...there's probably a whole lot more. I used my regular iron phosphate but it wasn't doing enough so I even bought metaldehyde. The latter really improved things but not enough, apparently. kimm, no idea when the damage occurs. I look at it closely a few times per week when I water but other than that, it's from afar. I have not seen anything on this plant, so I presume it's at night. I know that section of my yard is where I saw the huge number of what I think are ground beetles when I was washing off the fences and they started climbing UP? But I've never seen anything actually on the plant---just holes. Big holes. i also bought neem oil. I've never used it but given my trials this year, I figured it's better than not having it on hand. What I really wanted was Talstar, but that seemed a little severe LOL. If anyone knows a reason not to use neem on succulents, please holler and let me know. I did do beer traps and they are fun, fun, fun, haha! But I absolutely hated cleaning up the jars that would trap snails, slugs, earwigs and other long white creatures that I never ID'd, and then refilling them nightly was not much fun either. Once I got through two six-packs of Coors, I called it a day and bought the metaldehyde. The strange thing was that I didn't even bury them--simply put the can ON soil and by morning, they were full. All the bastards climbed up and into the cans to die.

Is it so wet because of a heavy storm? If so the tomato plant could just have broken in the wind since it wasn't staked or anything. The strip left attached would indicate wind breaking to me. The bean damage is minor and could also be storm damage or possibly slugs or beetles or any number of other things that only your exploration will ID. But if no further damage they should recover fine. Something clearly ate the berries and curiously without breaking any stems it appears or leaving any remains. IME that usually requires a full berry plucking motion just as people would use to pick them. So unless your had a 2 legged visitor I'd consider big birds too. Tomato plants and beans could sure use some mulching and stakes or cages for the tomato plants. Don't get too discouraged. It happens to all of us and surprisingly most things recover. You'll likely even see some new growth develop from the tomato plant. Dave

Frank is spot on in his advice. The only thing I would add to his list would be Oriental Fruit moth and Codling moth, which are common here.
