Best Tasting Cantelope Variety??

I am looking forward to planting a couple hills of cantelope next year and will select only one type.

I lean toward Ambosia but would appreciate your opinions of the best tasting cantelope....

I like Sugar Queen. Of course a good crenshaw is the very best.

Our Amborosias were excellent this year. Best cantaloupes I have ever had.

Reviving this awesome apple thread. I was reading through what I posted and I am amused by how quickly things change. at least half of the apples I listed have fallen off my own list. I've grafted over most of my spigold because it's really not that good after all. Mutsu is also somewhat uninteresting these days. Here is my new list of favorites: - coconut crunch is extraordinary in our climate and keeps really well - sinta, fruited for the first time last Fall, delicious strong pineapple flavor - Fiesta, really good for a Summer apple - Williams pride, my tastiest Summet apple after Viking - Orin, great storage apple that still has that tropical pineapple flavor in March - alkmene, yummy summer August apple that tastes lime a cox but even better - kidds orange red, superb in the Fall - Haralson, fruits well here in California and its good - transparente de cronkels, delicious and high quality I still love gravenstein, hauer pippin and granny smith off my old list. I am curious what will stand out this year, as it surely won't be the same as last year. -

Best way to taste avocado and mango varieties?

Flfishie - You can not go wrong with the Brogdon avocado, it is a good choice. Here is a ripe Brogdon going to be part of my lunch today On the mangoes it gets difficult to choose, lol. After I went to the tasting at Fairchild, I was confused like when you smell too many perfumes. I do prefer fruits that are small size and have no fiber, so that leaves me with fewer options if it was for me, also I found that is best to sample 1 variety at the time. So everyday I do only 1 mango from the varieties that I took home and here are my new favorites: 1. Alphonso 2. Fairchild 3. Champagne 4. Pairi I still have to sample the others... Silvia

What are your favorite best tasting varieties of Eggplant?

Prosperosa is a favorite of mine. They're a bit on the round side, and small enough that my spouse and I can use an entire eggplant in a meal. Most are about grapefruit sized. The flesh is immaculately white, almost to the point it seemed unreal when slicing into them first time! We've made some great eggplant parm from these. I also like the Middle Eastern varieties of late. Eggplant is a staple food throughout much of the Middle East, and I've found those varieties are well adapted to the arid Denver climate where I live. Aswad (available from Baker Creek) has performed really well for me, but they are big plants that produce big flat-bottomed teardrop shaped fruit, so far more space is required than for the smaller Italian varieties. Someday I'll try the Asian types, but they're generally too thin for the reason I grow them - eggplant parmesan!

If we could agree on the best tasting cantaloupe, that would be the only one on the market. Ambrosia is not in my top ten, but lots of folks like it. I like Supermarket, Sugar Queen, Star Headliner, Burpee's Hybrid, Excellence among regular cantaloupes. While I also love the Crenshaws, If i could only grow one cultivar, it would be a Galia type, probably Passport.

We are thinking along the same line, Farmerdilla. I'm having great sales success the last few years with the Galia types: Passport, Sensation, Rocky Sweet and Gourmet. They are all sugar sweet and the aroma that they give off is irresistable. My Athena and Aphrodite cantalopes are passed over for the Galia types regularly.

With any cantalope I've ever grown the question is not one of variety but more of which individual melon. I've cut open five or six until one just jumps out as having that perfect flavor profile. Not every cantalope that slips is fully ripe and unless you check them daily you can get a few that are overripe and too soft. It's a chalenge to consistantly harvest good flavored lopes.

I agree that they're unpredicable. This season my early Ambrosia were much sweeter than my later planted ones. Not sure why.

I'd suggest Hollybrook Luscious, but it's a muskmelon. Still good though! :) I have seeds if anyone would like some.
