Wisconsinites want mosaic class?

This is totally out of the sky, but I was just looking at the website of Wouterina Rianna de Raad. (link below) She is the artist that some of the folks at the stained glass and mosaic forum have gone to a class in Puerta Vallarta Mexico to learn from. I don't think I can do a week in Mexico, but I might be able to manage a weekend in Wisconsin! Especially if dh and I can make a detour on a vacation or if I started or ended a vaca there, joining him after or before.

ANyway, it would be a lot of fun to do with one (or more)of my buddies from here. Anyone interested? I don't know about the ones at her studio, but the ones that she does at other venues are $180 for 2 days. I would love to see her garden with sculpture, plus I have the basics of mosaic, so I'm more interested in making sculptures out of wire and concrete that you then mosaic, and learning what will last outside in the winter.

I noticed that she has these dates for workshops at her home studio this year.

I never heard of Beldenville Wisconsin. It's probably some little burg. I would love a class !!! I did this with a group of gals that worked with glass. We didn't oficially "go " to a class - but we all met and we all had our specialty -- and we taught each other . It was the best time of my life.
**And we were all strangers that met online ** I wish something like this would happen again . Input please ????

So are you suggesting that concreters/ mosaicers get together instead? Its true we could get a lot of materials for the price of a class.

It looks like Beldenville is very close to the border with MN, east of Minneapolis between Rt 94 and Rt 10, near Ellsworth, River Falls and Martell. I wish I'd known when we drove from NH to Minneapolis for a wedding some years ago. I would have loved to visit her garden.

Something I have done with kids is buy the ready-made plain stepping stones from the home improvement store. They have lots of shapes and sizes. Mix cement mortar into a toothpaste consistency. Spread the mortar over the top of the stepping stone with a spatula. Let it set for 3-4 minutes and then let the kids draw pics with pretty much any object (skewer, pencil, screwdriver) or let them push marbels, small mirrors, seashells, etc. into the mortar. (Be sure to have them wear gloves. The cheap ones you use for food service or hair dying work fine. The mortar dries the skin out really bad.) The one Christian likes the most he made is made from different size stars that glow in the dark. He loves to check it out at night. There are cheap (99 cents a bottle) paints out now that are permanent on outside items. Some have to be baked on in an oven to 250 and/or air dried. I have experimented with these and they really do work. I have used them on terra cotta without any preparation to the pot (just clean) and the paint has lasted over two years outside winter and summer so far. There are some several clays on the market that don't have to be fired in a kiln...either air dry or bake in a 250 degree oven. Check with a larger hobby store. Sculpey is the brand I prefer. It comes in lots of colors. The hobby store will also have books of tips and projects. The kids absolutely love to put it through the pasta maker to flatten, make hair/fur, etc. Like someone stated earlier, not art for art sake but something the kids can see an end result in a couple of lessons. They will be learning the whole time but hands-on learning and not so much like 'school work.' Check with your local library. They should have a lot of books on this subject.

Hey yall! yes I made it ok. Got here about 9pm. Today was our first class with Rianna. Boy, we are learning so much. It's harder than I thought it would be. The metal lath can be very sharp, some folks have gotten some good cuts! You should see some of the projects folks are working on. Roni is making a strawberry!! Looking very neat! Roni's mom is making an angel. The rest of us are making head planters/sconces. You should see the mosaic pieces brought in for the show. WOW!! I can't wait to show you pictures!! And by golly, you wouldn't believe Slows house. Amazing..words can't describe it... Wish yall were here with us!!

Ok, here goes my first attempt...ok, I previewed and think it worked! I think it sounds good. Following is the handout I furnish my students. You can see if there is anything there you can use: Mosaic instructions: Substrate: For indoor projects, use wood, terra cotta, glass, etc., almost anything except flexible plastic. The substrate must be rigid. If it flexes, the grout will crack. For outdoors, do NOT use wood. Wood will eventually warp no matter how well it is sealed. Use hardibacker, cement backer board, glass, or concrete. Tesserae: Ceramic tile, vitreous glass tile, stained glass, smalti, broken china and pottery, glass beads, shells, pebbles, and jewelry. I usually avoid wooden beads and organic beads such as those made from beans or pods. Adhesives: For indoor projects, use Weldbond water-based glue (except mirror tiles). For mirror tiles, use GE Silicone II Kitchen and Bath clear sealant. For outdoor projects use Mapei brand Ultra Flex 2 polymer modified mortar (this is a thinset to be used as an adhesive). Grout: Polyblend sanded grout mixed with Acrylic Mortar Admix. Sealants: For indoor projects, use Aqua Mix Grout Sealer. Brush on, polish off the tesserae. For outdoor projects, use Aqua Mix UltraSeal Premium Stone & Tile Sealer. Spray on, polish off the tesserae. Mosaic Steps to follow: 1. Glue on tesserae. Wait 24 hours. 2. Grout. Clean tesserae. Wait 24 hours. 3. Seal. Clean tesserae. Tools: Tile nippers. The best are the wheeled Leponitt nippers. Carborundum stone. This can be purchased at an Ace Hardware and is called a kitchen sharpener. Sponges, rectangular, to wipe the grout off the tesserae. Old terry cloth rags, craft sticks, plastic bins for mixing grout and for water. Gloves. Blue painterÂs tape Methods: Direct Â glue tesserae directly onto the substrate. Tesserae can also be glued to mesh and then transported elsewhere and affixed to a wall for example. Indirect Â lay tesserae in a mold, upside down, and pour cement, as for a stepping stone, or glue tesserae upside down onto brown Kraft paper. The indirect method is usually used when a smooth surface is required, or when mosaics are made in a studio and then transported elsewhere for installation. A helpful book is Classic Mosaic by Elaine M. Goodwin.

I don't have anything about a class except to say that anyone going to Mexico for a class is crazy. The murders down there are unbelievable, sometimes 19 to 21 people killed in a weekend. Quite a number of Americans. Major drug wars down there & my Mexican friends won't go home to visit!! It's all over Mexico & they warn you at the border also. 1 lady wanted a bowl to match rest of her dishes that she had gotten from just over the bridge from her El Paso home she was shot dead in the street. That was year or more ago & when I 1st noticed it. Now they are worse & killing tourist along with police & rival drug members.Missionaries are told to stay out also. Wis. is good!! Much safer & have fun!! Jan

I've never heard of Beldenville, but when I looked it up on Mapquest it appears to be about 65 miles from me. I live in Champlin, MN .......Hmmm.

I am always looking for craft classes in Wisconsin! I never heard of this woman but her stuff looks fun. TMG, Beldenville is over near the "west coast" of Wisconsin. It looks like it isn't all that far from Eau Claire. I looked it up on Google Maps and it is about 295 miles from Milwaukee. The nearby hotels are in River Falls. I will have to ask a friend if she would be interested in something like this.

The mosaic classes are $155 plus $20 for materials. The workshops are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

This sounds like fun!
