Kudzu....thinking of you!

I was glancing at some blogs which I do occasionally, and Kudzu is one at top of my list. I saw the post about falling and breaking your hip on Sunday. And that you hurt too bad to sit, stand, or walk.

So you lay on the couch and watch TV and snack till you can get back here and let us know how you are doing.

I'm thinking of you too! And sending up prayers that you will feel better soon! Miss you & your wonderful ideas!! Going to get the coffee filters tomorrow morning with GF & see if we can make anything half as pretty as you do!! Do get a rail around the porch so you are safer!! Check in for minute so we know how you are!! Jan

Both common and glossy buckthorn are absolutely, without a doubt, DESTROYING vast wooded areas up here. Shade tolerant and very prolific, they easily move into wooded areas and set up shop. Once established they prevent EVERYTHING else from growing there. No more spring wildflowers, no more tree seedlings. Even maples, which are as a group very shade tolerant themselves, will not regenerate under the buckthorns. If you don't think something like this is a problem, it is because you lack the awareness of, and appreciation for, what was there before. Every exotic species is not invasive. I intend to plant some Norway spruce, for example, on land I plan to buy. Norway spruce can reproduce in this area, but will never become a problem plant. This discussion absolutely calls for a nuanced approach. Banning the use of ALL non-native species would be hugely ill-advised. But taking the view that any plant that can grow in a given locale should therefor be allowed to do so is just plain ignorant. The buckthorn invasion up here has been described as a slow-motion catastrophe, by people that can see and understand what's happening. Again, I think that people that don't see these invaders as problems have little understanding of the havoc they are causing. +oM

reyesuela- You need to be clear on the facts before you criticize. If you were familiar with EPA's Asbestos-in-Schools rules, you would know that EPA does not have the authority to arbitrarily force schools to remove asbestos. I am familiar with the program, and I can tell you that the only removals that have occurred after asbestos was identified in schools were done because of independent decisions by the school districts involved in light of the hazards that were identified. Here is a quote from a set of EPA FAQ's: Is the school district required to do anything about asbestos-in-schools? Yes. AHERA, or the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, was passed by Congress in 1986. AHERA requires public school districts and non-profit private schools to inspect their schools for asbestos containing building material and prepare management plans which recommend the best way to reduce the hazard from any asbestos that may be present. Options include repairing damaged asbestos containing material, spraying it with sealants, enclosing it, removing it, or keeping it in good condition so that it does not release fibers. The plans must be developed by accredited management planners and approved by the State. The school authority must notify parent, teacher and employer organizations of the plans, and then the plans must be implemented. The school district must also perform periodic surveillance of asbestos containing material every 6 months in its schools. AHERA also requires accreditation of abatement designers, contractor supervisors and workers, building inspectors, and school management plan writers. How unreasonable does that sound? I know it's tempting to tell stories about mindless government bureaucrats, but please dig a little deeper next time before repeating urban myths. So I let my GC know that I was a little worried about no backsplash and he called me right away. Offered to come out to the house to talk to us again. Said he would totally do it if we wanted to, he was just afraid I will not like the look. First we do not have bullnose tile and are using chrome, flat edge Schluter, which will go with the other chrome fixtures in the room. He was not sure I would like where the schluter edges would meet at the L and if I would like the edges going across. He also expressed the possibility that when the guys go to attach the floating vanity to the tiled wall that the a tile could crack. So I think I may have freaked out/panicked a little. He seems totally cool. Now I guess the ball is in my court and I just have to make sure I make the right decision. Do I run the shower tile behind the vanity or not?? HELP!

jaxo- Okay...maybe we are talking about the same type of 1/4" line. I just looked at your picture and saw the smaller, black, out-of-focus line and it didn't look like standard dripper line to me. Can you post a clearer picture of a drip line connected to a fitting? It's still not clear to me why a line would pop off if the pressure was low enough for drip line (25-30 psi). Many, but not all, valves have a pressure reducer screwed directly to them, but they can go bad over time. Or maybe you don't have one. If you have one attached to a valve it might look like this: Another problem is that, if you have pop-up sprayers, you want full line pressure, and if you have drippers you don't. That means that you don't want to have both on the same line. You want separate lines so you can have the appropriate pressures for each. As far as measuring the pressure, you'd need a water pressure gauge which you can get for $10 at a big box store. It has hose threads, and would allow you to measure what the water pressure is at your faucet. If you wanted to measure what the pressure is for the drip line, you'd need to cut the 1/2" poly at a point before any of the drippers and mount a plastic male hose fitting on the line. The you could attach the gauge and see how much pressure you have when the system comes on. You could fix the break by putting a female hose fitting on the remaining cut end, and then screw the line back together.

Hey Kudzu,
I hope you are healing nicely. You really need to put a rail around that fence....seems like this isn't the first time that I read about you falling off the porch. Don't snack too much while you are layed up. Trust me, it takes a lot of gardening to burn all that off (I'm speaking from experiece since I am still trying to burn off what I snacked on last summer!) My thoughts are with you. Get better soon! We need your inspiration!

Oh no, I regret that bad news! Cherry, I hope you'll be back in the saddle soon! Gosh ... stuff happens! Just hate that! Miss you and will be looking for word on your progress! Prayers and hopes going your way for a speedy recovery! I hope you can do water therapy, it will be very helpful to move without bearing weight. *sigh* it's like part of the color went out of our rainbow ... ~tenderlee

I was looking for you and I also saw your blog post. Ouuuuuuuccccchhhhhhhh. So sorry. Good thing you are young enough to get through this quicker. I also reccommend water therapy. It was wonderful help before I had my back surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are all over this!!!! Susie/TEXAS

Oh goodness! Thanks for the well wishes from everyone!

There's no break, the doctor only calls it "hip displacement", he said he would call if he found anything in the x-rays(health care in Mississippi) In the meantime, I'm to take it easy, and try to lay flat. He gave me 5 pills to take(wow, 5 WHOLE pills...all for ME!) non-narcotic pills at that,not pain relievers, but some sort of muscle relaxer. They didn't do a darn thing for me,either. I see another doctor on March 3 (health care in Mississippi).
And I hate for ya'll to think I'm a real klutz( I AM,sorta) LOL...but my front porch only has 2 steps off of it, and I do have a rail and hand rails,lol! It has a lot to do with all the anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications I take all day long and the fact that my mind forgets I'm not a teen-aged gymnast or cheerleader anymore *blush* Oh and we shouldn't have tried to make the molded concrete walk starting right under the steps...too uneven! I've crafted a few things I'll post about later. Here's the front porch...she looks innocent,doesn't she?

So sorry about your lay-up with the hip. Here's a prayer or 2 (2 prayers 4 kudzu) for a swift recovery. It's too bad you can't put your bed on that front porch since you have to just lay around for a while. I could recooperate on that front porch. It's as lovely as your creations.

Wow.. is it ever lovely and cozy! Someone would have to DRAG me inside.

But you said " I'm not a teen-aged gymnast"....so were you leaping over the railing and doing backflips? LOL.
CUT THAT STUFF OUT !

OK, I love your porch but I think you should widen that bottom step & get the rock out of there & get those garage floor rubber things that fit together & put a couple of layers so if you fall again you will bounce!!!!! LOL. I thought you needed a rail as lady I used to take to church was in her 90's & I would go visit her sometimes too & she was always talking about getting a rail as she had none. You could just step off the porch anywhere it was about 10x20 ft. & no rail by the 2 steps either. I guess that is what I figured you had. You may be turning on those stones or slipping & falling. They don't look too safe for anyone on meds!! If wet they could be slick!! Love the porch tho, looks so inviting. Jan

Beautiful front porch you have there Kudz. Would be a comfortable place to plank down. I am so glad it isn't a break. Nasty things breaks are. Hope you heal quickly and get back to crafting
