Does close melon, squash plant spacings affect plant/fruit size?

Close, as in a couple of inches of each other.

I started all of these inside this year with the expectation of thinning them after I put them out. Well I did this with the butternut and cantaloupe, but not the others. I still have 2 good sized closely spaced seedlings of each of the following, Straightneck Early yellow, dark green zucchini and Charleston Grey. The plants are looking fantastic despite the 100+ degree days. It's a shame to have to whack one of each of them out.

One other thing. I knew watermelon plants were tough, but not this tough. These seedling were put out, in full all day sun with no shade, of a 114 degree day. The next day was also 114 and then we've been 105+ since then. They're growing great and not showing any signs of heat stress. I'm growing these all over the yard next year.
