Well, I don't know for sure, but I wanted to pass along something I heard just this morning. I was at a nursery, and was admiring a huge pot planting which contained sweet potato vine. This pot was in the shade, and I didn't realize that you could grow SPV in the shade successfully. The nuserywoman (whom I know to be quite knowledgable) was nearby, so I asked her about it. She said it grows fairly well in the shade, not as vigorously as in the sun, but fairly well - "but you have to watch out for slugs. You can already see the damage there". Sure enough, the leaves had many little round holes in them, which I never would have recognized as slug damage. They looked very round and neat, whereas I thought slug damage was more irregular and ragged. So anyway, for what it's worth, thought I'd pass it along. Good luck! :) Dee

Last week my late corn took a beating very similar in your pics and I figured that it's either early morning squirrels or late nite raccoons. I surrounded my plot with nylon netting but the varments were still getting into the corn chewing thru the nets and eating the pre-ripened ears like peeling bananas. I was wrong on both varment counts. I placed a large hav-a-hart trap in the middle of the corn plot (with ear inside) and the next morning I had a skunk in the trap with an ear eaten to the bone. I knew that skunks were stealing my grapes but apparently they love Ambrosia sweet corn too.

Hi Dianne It looks to me like it might be mole damage, we have those around. The safest way to go is to peel and cut the bad parts, and cook it to be used in meals or freeze. I only save the ones that look blemish free to make slips for spring or eat later. Dianne, hopefully for the next spring party I will have a lot of slips to share with others including the big one, colorette that I got from Echo. And remember the apples in the front yard? One is Thomas Jefferson favorite heirloom apple and the tall one close to the garage is a Pink Lady apple and I let it fruit 2 apples this year and they were good! Silvia
