My new variegated peace lily (pic)

I saw some of these plants over the weekend for sale at a local nursery and I felt lucky that I was able snatch one up before they were all gone!

Billy Rae, your new peace lily is lovely. I've read about variegated peace lilies, but I've never seen one in the stores. You were smart to snatch it up.

Do variegated peace lilies need more light than non variegated ones?

Thanks Amanda,

Yes, it wouldn't hurt to give this one just a "little bit more" bright light than the all green to keep the variegation bright with maybe some "late" afternoon sun as well and it should be fine.

It's still alive as long as the stalks are green and flexible, so there is still hope, even though it's very close to dying. Does the pot it's in now have drain holes? It is important that the water can drain out well. Peace lilies are kind of fussy about watering. They don't like to dry out for long periods, but they also will rot if they stay soggy all the time. I would suggest checking it by putting a finger in the soil every day and water it when you notice that the soil is mostly dry. That way you can water it before it starts to droop but still give it time to "breathe" by allowing it to mostly dry out. Can you open the blinds so it can get all the light from that window? Most likely it is not getting enough light right now with the blinds down. Knowing what direction the window faces would help in determining how close to the window it should be.

It may be the way it was raised. The new one might have been growing in less than great light, so the leaves may be kinda stretched out. Palms do that. If grown in too-low light they will "reach" and have longer fronds than the same palm grown in correct lighting. I looked for a Ming aralia too, they had them all over last season, but no one had any left. They will probably get them back in the Spring though.

The mushrooms come from the potting soil. They are somewhat ubiquitous to peat based media. MiracleGro is primarily composed of rather finely processed peat moss, just exactly what this mushroom likes. I'd like to ask you about your watering habits. When it's time to water, do you really drench the whole soil volume? The reason I ask is because peat heavy mixes can become hydrophobic, developing dry pockets that are very difficult to re-wet. In my opinion, that makes MiracleGro a challenge to work with. Spaths are sensitive. They like to have moisture at the roots, but will develop root/crown rot very quickly if overly saturated. A porous, fast draining potting medium allows us to water frequently and freely with very little fear of root rot. Since this fungus feeds on the organic content (peat), it (the peat) will slowly decompose into smaller and smaller particles. Before too long, the roots won't be able access oxygen at all. You should know that those little mushrooms are merely the temporary fruiting bodies of the real fungus....a network of threadlike hyphae and mycellium that grow and feed in the potting medium 24/7. Removing the mushrooms means nothing in the life of the fungus.....much like picking a flower doesn't hurt a plant. That's what I mean about the long run.

Libby, to be honest I think the Domino's are easier to care for than the standard Peace Lily for some reason. I water mine just as the leaves start to wilt and been doing this since the 90's. It flowers yr round..gets little fertilizer and none in winter. Since I've had it, it's only been repotted once from a 8 to 10" pot..Toni

I re-potted it today because it was drying out two days after watering it. The pot was full of nothing but a ton of fat roots. There was maybe a half a cup of soil "inside" the middle of the root mass. NO soil whatsoever on the outside of the root-ball at all!

Oh Billy, it sure sounds like it needed re-potting..What size pot did you plant in? What size was the original pot? What material pot did u use?
Though they're not the prettiest containers on earth, I really prefer plastic pots, (plants are sold in) or clay. (though I wouldn't pot up a PL in a clay pot) Good luck w/your new baby..Toni

Hi All,

Interestingly Toni, I found this varieg. one tougher to grow than the regular, which I also used to grow. Have since given up on Spaths, watering a bit too tricky for me now & it's a houseplant, that while quite lovely, I ended up quitting for the sake of more succulents & of course, more Hoyas!

For interested parties, these sometimes show up in supermarkets (nice sized one my at my market 1 or 2 yrs. ago for $9) &/or box stores, often called Spath "Domino".

I received a vargi lily from my neighbor, I repotted it as it appeared to root bound, it has done well with the eception of blooming, it tries to bloom, the blooms turn brown and die. what is the issue?? it is inside, not in direct sun light. thanks

Is this plant in the same family of an aglaonema. Don't they look similiar. I have problems growing both peace lilies and aglaonemas.
