A steam juicer... in my dreams, yes, in my budget... no! I fiddled around though and came up with this alternative and although it's rather putzy, I've gotten some nice juice from grapes and raspberries. Lovely clear jellies also. I have a very large old ceramic turkey roaster and a large stainless steel strainer. I line the strainer with two doubled layers of dampened cheesecloth, criss-crossed, for a total of four layers. I put my fruit in the strainer, the strainer in the roaster and the roaster in the oven. I also put about a cup or so of water in there as well, to get the steam started. The fruit releases its juice which then drains from the strainer into the roaster. As long as there is a tight cover, the steam stays inside and the juice stays "juicy". Unfortunately, my strainer is a wee bit too large for the cover to stay on tightly, so I end up leaving the roaster cover off and just covering it all up tightly with aluminum foil. Let it cool a bit before removing the cover or foil or you'll lose some of that precious steam liquid. ;) Then, I can drain off that juice and if I still want or need more, I put a pie plate in the strainer and use a pitcher of water as a weight, letting that press out any more juice. It sounds like a lot of work I suppose, but while it's time consuming, mostly it's prep work and I can use the stovetop for other things or be off doing other projects while the fruit is in the oven or being pressed. Of course, I have then strained juice through a coffee filter as well to get a really clear juice, but either way, this juice is providing some of the clearest jellies I've ever made.

I did see the UK article and also researched Slim mold. I think it resembles the substance in the UK article. It is sticky and when I picked up a piece larger than in photo I posted with a shovel, it was solid. I will keep you posted. Thank you both for the input. Let me know if you learn anything new! Maybe its a different form of Kryptonite. Ha! Ha!

Oriental Fruit Moth (OFM) is one of the two serious bugs that damage peaches (both fruits and shoots). The other one is coddling moths. Pick off all peaches that have entry marks, oozing. They are done. They will drop if you don't pick them off first. Do not throw damaged peaches in compost pile, you extend the moths' life cycle in the ground. Throw them out with trash. If you cut the fruit up, you'll see damages inside. If you want, keep some in the bucket and wait a few days, you'll see worm stage of the moths. As for spray, you can only save the clean peaches (if there are any left). The insecticide that is used by many members here is Triazicide Once and Done by Spectracide. You should mix spreader/sticker with Triazicide so the chemical will stay on longer. The one you can find easily is by a Bonide product called Turbo Spreader/Sticker. You can easily find those products at Home Depot or Lowe's. It's a quick fix. Then, if you are more organically inclined, you should look for Surround, it's kaolin fine clay. It can be sprayed as protectant. Do not need to mix with spreader. I can't find Surround in my local Home Depot or Lowe's so I have to order it on line. That takes a few days, by then, OFM would damage all your peaches. If you have organic plant supplier nearby, they may carry Surround. Looks like all that stuff oozed out of a small split just above the flower. Does it smell bad? If so I'd say it's rotting inside and you might as well compost it. Even if not, it seems like bad news. Any sort of small split like that should heal up and not bleed its guts all over. There should in fact be nothing liquid or runny inside a healthy squash. On the other hand, it could just be a healing reaction to a split. Like a tree oozing some sap while it heals a wound. I know that squashes will ooze a little gel when there's an injury, but not like that. Have I cleared this up for you? 8^)
