Preppy, I have seen Emeralds so tall that the migrant workers could not pick them easily but height is controlled by you through pruning. Rabbiteye blueberries can hit 15-20 feet I guess again if allowed to do so. There are some commercial growers here in Florida that have acres and acres of blueberries all in 30 gallon pots. They may produce slightly less in a pot for most people. I know Steve (Fruitnut) had a huge yield out of a Star BB in a pot..bigger than I have ever got from my inground plants even but he is a rockstar grower:) He knows his stuff. Wisteria is not well suited to container growth - it is just too big and too vigorous a vine to be content for long in a container that would suit most balconies. Blueberries are often grown in a container and can make a nice addition to a balcony. Be aware that growing anything in a container is much different from growing the same plant in the ground. The medium - potting soil - is critical as is routine fertilizing. Potting soil has little to no nutrient value so all nutrients must be provided by the grower. And it's important what kind of fertilizer you use. Organic fertilizers tend not be very effective in a container situation as they need to be processed by soil organisms to become available to the plant roots and there's just not many soil critters lurking about in potting soil. I would assume you didn't get much flowering on your blueberry because of the blood meal - it is pretty heavy in nitrogen (12-0-0)and so encourages foliar growth at the expense of flowers and fruit. Same with the fish (5-1-1). Try a fertilizer with less N and more P&K to encourage flowering and fruiting. Blueberries also like rather acidic conditions so make sure you address that as well. Miracle Gro for Acid Lovers is a good choice. It is also important to realize that plants grown in containers are far more vulnerable to winter cold than are those grown in the ground. Plant roots are very cold sensitive compared to top growth and without the insulating factor of all that soil mass around them, are easily damaged by cold weather. And as much of the eastern half of the country experienced a colder than normal winter cold damage with container plantings is not unexpected. Add to that the exposure of a balcony setting and it sounds like you are lucky to have then survive at all.

I just bought this guy at Home Depot a few days ago and I'm wondering if he's okay. Some of his branches are brown at the ends and a few leaves have little spots. Also some of the leaves are burnt and a few are/were dead. He came like this and I've been gently keeping him moist and sunny. He looks greener to me but I'm not sure since this is my first time with blueberries. I do plan on moving him into a nice 5 gal bucket in the future. Oh also last night he took a fall from a few feet onto his side, will he be okay? I know the roots are very delicate and I'm worried that he might die. He is already in good acidic, we'll draining soil, peat moss, etc. I'm trying to upload pictures but it's not going so well on my phone (don't have internet access at home).

I've been growing blueberries in pots for several years and they have been productive. I am in central Ohio (sort of borderline 5b-6a). I planted them in a variety of containers, mostly the black pots recycled from tree plantings (asked for them when I saw landscapers installing trees) but also the lightweight, thick walled foam sort and even cat litter buckets with drainage holes drilled. They do seem to like the tree pots best, wider and shallower rather than narrow and deep. I mixed plain peat moss with chopped autumn leaves, maybe a little sand and a little soil thrown in. They've done well in this. In autumn I do pile leaves around the pots, and toss a little onto the top of the potting mix too. I don't really remember all the varieties that I have - except for Pink Lemonade. I may have Sunshine Blue, Northland and/or Northblue, Bluecrop, maybe Patriot, and one or two others. I wish I knew the one bush, very productive with large sweet berries. I have always kept the plastic plant ID stick in the pot but they always disappear in a year or so. I need to start writing right on the pot! I have a frame with netting over them to keep the birds off and the racoons away.
