Pothos thriving in aquariums and dying in fish ponds

Spouse has pothos thriving in guppy tanks - this is not too commonplace among aquarium enthusiasts but rare either.

I took a three foot pothos vine from a guppy tank and dropped it outside in a goldfish pond where other plants were beginning to do their spring growth. In less than a week it turned black and rotted.

The water temperature outside was about 55°F. Was that too cold? Both inside and outside the pothos was completely submerged but I wondered, could the problem be too much light?
