Hi Lingon. I had holes in my chard and kale this spring and never saw what was making them, although I'm pretty sure it was some sort of larvae. (So, it could be the same thing you are dealing with.) I sprayed with a bacillus thuringensis mixture and haven't had a problem since. I'm not as familiar with spinosad, but it is also considered to be a low-impact biological control that works well on soft-bodied organisms (but won't hurt worms). There are, apparently, a couple of fungi that cause leaf spot on Swiss Chard, neither of which I have seen here, yet. A couple of common sprays for fungi are 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 quart of water, or a 50/50 mixture of fat free milk and water, sprayed every 5 to 7 days. How effective these would be for this I can't say.

gardengal, I gave the plant a good spray and it definitely seems to have helped; the aphids haven't returned yet. I will keep trying this method if they do as it seems the most natural and least hard on the plant. That's a good point Ken! Actually I was not completely accurate in my first post - although the original recipe I used to make the spray called for dish detergent, I used Dr Bonner's soap because I read it is less harmful to plants. Any truth to that? I'm also wondering what about other recipes for pest control I've seen around the web, like diatomaceous earth and vinegar/water solution - is putting these on plants also harmful to the plants? Going to try to stick with water spraying for now and hope it does the trick.
