using concrete squares to tile my kitchen island

After thinking many different materials for the top of my kitchen, including wood, steel, stainless steel with cut-outs, stainless steel with stained glass inserts, copper,.....I've come up with (to me) is an attractive idea, make 10" flat squares of concrete resurfer, gluing them to the plywood substrate, and then grouting. Does the group think this would work? The island is 30'x80'. I could make the few quirky tiles where simple 10" squares wouldn't fit. I would also like to carve out a thin meadering stream (if you will)running down the length and middle of the island top, and fill with crushed glass of different colors and melt it with my little butane torch. or maybe the "stream" could be small smooth river stone.

Could I do a topical paint job, rather than mix a color into the wet concrete? Something that could be coated and sealed so it could be washed. This island is essentially where we eat meals, but not prepare them (now, kitchen counters are one my new list!).
