Sugar Snap Peas Fall Crop in IA

When do I plant sugar snap peas in zone 5a in Iowa? I want to do them as a fall crop this year? It's my first time growing them. Do you think a tomato cage would work to grow them? Or is that not a good trellis?

Don't know. When is your first frost? Might be too late for you.

About three weeks ago.

You might try a dwarf like Sugar Ann that is a good 10-15 days earlier to bear. Still, get them planted ASAP.

Or just go ahead and try the regular Sugar Snaps. You could probably just cover them if you have really cold nights in October and try to get them through.

And, with this crazy weather and the long term forecast showing a big bubble of much above normal temps through the winter in the upper Midwest, this is probably a great year to experiment with late crops anyway. So even though it's late, the odds are better than average that you might get something.

DTM on most varieties is 60-65 days so it is easy to plant in Sept. and get a crop by end of October into early November. My official first frost date isn't until Nov. 10 but it is usually much later than that because of my zone 7 micro-climate here by the lake. These are quite frost tolerant so I am usually still harvesting well into Nov. or even early Dec. I don't know your first frost date down there but I'd expect it to be later than mine so adjust planting time accordingly. Dave

The peas would need to be fully matured -- to the point where the pods are dry and brown -- to be sure of getting good germination. If you don't absolutely have to plant RIGHT NOW you can probably mail order seed. I got seed from Pinetree and Shumway in less than a week this month after placing my order online.

I did a bit more research and found the answer to my own question. Here's the info: According to the Cornell Cooperative Extension, fall plants should be sown 8-10 weeks before first frost, which for my area is Oct 30-Nov 10. The really quick peas are short vined, so they won't need a tall trellis. I put in a couple of rows this week, for October harvest. The tall vines take longer to bear.
