Depends upon the size of the pot, but I used to give one of these to every one of my landscape clients. Elevate yours off the ground. The pots IIRC had maybe 9-10 openings and I used either a scrap 1/2 or 3/4 in SCH40 PVC (either is fine, just whatever I had left from the job), end of pipe is always capped, and your holes can be 1/4 or less, just make sure they go to the bottom and you have many holes, as likely some will be clogged. Once you get the hang of it on your own, these are great gifts, some of the best I've ever given - give some pot feet with them, preferably from someone you know who fires them. Dan

Thanks, jackierooke! I went ahead and got one to see what they are like. I know it won't be big enough but like you said, if all else fails.... bean counter - checked in Walmart, in fact three of them, all the same stuff but not this; also two Lowes; Home Depot is a bit away and haven't been there since last year; Q Farm & Fleet is now Tractor Supply and about all they have for gardening is a few garden tools and a token seed rack. Our one garden/landscaping center is nice to look at but would have to sell your 1st born to afford anything and no, they didn't have any either. I think these planters have just gone out of vogue as the big terra cotta ones were so hard to handle and broke easily. Thanks all, if you find anything else keep posting!!

Gary has it. I got a large one of these for my wife as an anniversary gift a few years ago. I had to pack the soil down around the roots of the plants I put in it as I filled the pot. I would keep the soil moist so that it bound together as I filled the pot. Since then, I have been toying with the idea of covering each hole from the inside with cheap nylon screening material. I could then cut slits in the screen and place my plant and not have to worry about the soil coming back out. Haven't tried this yet though.

In my area it is typically midMay, but in general when it won’t be below freezing for more than a few hours since you don’t want freeze thaw cycles. The mass of surrounding mulch or soil will help keep the temperature in the pot even since the mass of the surrounding soil or mulch heats and cools slowly, unlike air which can change temperatures in more rapid and greater swings.
