Can I graft onto a Cherry Laurel? I have one (hate it too)

I have a Cherry Laurel, which I despise but cannot remove as I rent. I can however graft onto it (I asked.) Now I know a cherry laurel (except the fruit, which is tiny and blah) is poisonous. Can one graft onto it? I don't know how to graft (at any rate all my attempts have failed.) but it might be a good way to utilized that nasty tree.

Also, are grafting tools worth trying? I read that one is better off just learning how to graft properly rather than use the plier-like tools (which run about sixty dollars plus shipping. There is a thirty dollar on at Lee Valley Farms but it only does one cut.)
