My corn is tasseling???

I have some healthy looking sweet corn that is about 2 to 2 1/2 feet high...and one of them is already tasseling...? What did I do wrong or what can I do to prevent this. I am fairly sure that it is too short to be tasseling and won't produce corn...thanks for your help!

You know, mine just did the same thing the other day? I've got a dozen or so tasseling at 2-3 feet. I was wondering the same thing if it's too short to be tasseling. Mine are very close together so that could be part of it for me. /shrug.

Hi weedsmakemecrazy,

I went through the same thing and wondered the same thing. Now my corn is about 4 and half feet tall the tassle just keeps getting bigger as does the stalk. I still don,t have any silk showing yet but hope it does soon!! I wouldn't say you did anything wrong. I heard that some corn just does it's thing sooner than others. I think all you can do is wait and watch it grow. Anyway good luck to both of us hopefully we'll get some sort of good corn to eat!! HAPPY GARDENING!!

I've grown corn about four times, so I'm no expert, BUT, if your temperatures go up into the upper 80's or 90's as it does here, the corn will be ready in less than 21 days. Maybe paulc can give you other indications for readiness that you (and I ) can go by. Mine was saved from going way past prime by someone who noticed that the corn was ready from the looks of the silks. Kandy Korn is a little more 'forgiving'. I was waiting for the 21 days.

Well, I saw today what I have feared, my corn is tasseling but it is only 2.5-3' tall. I have left it fertilized, watered, weeded, etc. but still. The only thing I can think of is our unusual early heat. In April it got up to 103* which was 30+ degrees hotter than normal. The weather has been strange flexing between cooler than normal and hotter than normal and now we are set in with hot temps (the past week have been between 100-107) with high winds. We didn't have ANY spring rains at all and even though I watered it just isn't the same. I planted some fall corn a couple of weeks back, hopefully it will do something. As a kid I remember getting so much corn you couldn't eat/can it all, now it is a miracle if you get any at all (and that was only 10yrs ago!). Thank you everyone for your help!

All things being equal, some corn only gets 5 ft tall. Other varieties will will be 9 to 10 ft. Some varieties will produce 3 ears per stalk but the third ear will be under developed. That's because it emerges too late to polinate. Corn has to have high nitrogen, water and sun. When silks turn brown, their done.

Bruce, I also hate to hear your disappointment and I feel you brother. Corn is not easy on the micro scale. I am a city gardener so I have limited space. My corn plat is 12 x 14 and I consider 90%+ pollinated kernels good results. I assume you did plant your corn in a block as that will help up the %. I also will take a tassel from stunted plants and give it a shake over good plant silks. This may be a silly Witch Doctor ritual but like I say I am a city gardener so I have to go to strange lengths to get stuff pollinated. I personally grow early corn and not the tall varieties. I can plant them thicker and feel it helps to pollinate the block. All in all you win some and lose some. Sounds like youÂre a loser this year in corn. I was too with the long wet spell we had, but I replanted drowned plants and my second run ended up good. I am a loser this year in squash, however. I had just cleared a stripped cucumber beetle infestation, and then SVB manifested as the real culprit and is now wiping me out. The Lord gives more than enough in the end. Hobo, I no longer play the milky not milky game with corn. After many a sleepless night I conceded to it and raised its ear in victory over me. I now go by silk color for my sanity. Others I know go by timer (day since silks). When the silks are a somewhat uniform golden brown (on average) I harvest. By golden brown I mean like somewhere between fried catfish and fried chicken, if that helps clear it up. Good luck! Christopher S. OKC

Yep, I noticed mine is starting to tassel this morning, too... and I came here and did a search. Found another thread about this very thing (tassels producing at only a couple of feet or so tall), and the reply was that this was entirely normal, and the corn should take off now and get very tall very quickly.

So, not to worry! :-)

Thanks everyone....I'm feeling a lot more hopeful. I swear that new tassle (and the plant) grew 6 inches while I was at work today...and then I got your posts so I think we are all healthy and prepping for sweet corn over here.

Karl: great pics...but where did you get that awesome wire trellis near your tomatos? I could use one like that...maybe I can find one like it in Massachusetts. Do you know who makes it? I need some pointers on trellising. I am sort of new at vegetable gardening and if you looked at my 9 ft tall peas hanging all over various strings and string mesh and looking pathetic (but producing) you would blantantly see that I do not know what I am doing when it comes to trellising!!! :)
I guess I just started and new topic for a new thread, but would love to know your ideas.
