I Just Ate My First Radish Seedpod

Â it was good!

I over wintered a half dozen of my winter radishes and planted them this spring to collect seeds from. I heard they were edible so I tasted one. ItÂs the same radish flavor in a little bite size crunch. I chopped some up and put it on a salad. Tasty.

Hey, I just ordered radishes for my fall garden. I forgot about the seedpod idea, I think I'll try overwintering some. Thanks! Maureen

I grew 'rattail radish' a few years ago. I had let some seed pods stay and kept them going for a couple of years but really should have saved the seed. I had originally gotten the seed from Pinetree but they stopped carrying it. It didn't produce much of a radish, the flowers were light purple and the seed pods were long and tender. I let some French breakfast radish go to seed this year to see if I could substitute and some of the pods were tender enough to eat but they got tuff and stringy quickly. I wonder if the winter radish has a more tender pod? On another note, I've been eating Siberian Kale flower buds all summer in salads.

I am! Better looking than any roses I've ever received from heirloom, no diss intended, the root system and all looked great! High country's roses look symilar( SP?) in comparison. I only have a small green house, and the ones that would fit in it I put in their lol. I plan on buying a bigger one because I don't think I will be able to plant them until next spring , and just pot them up into bigger pots when they need it. Right now they are in one gal. and enjoying the rain since we got some today! then I will put the smaller ones back in the greenhouse until wed, and get a bigger greenhouse for them all! My husband thinks I'm crazy for my love of roses, but I don't care! he has his passions and I have mine!

That's so exciting! I ate my first couple pea pods yesterday. I've never had them raw, and was quite surprised with how sweet and yummy they were. We must have similar weather/temps going right now, between the poppies blooming around the same time, and now the peas. I also noticed some tiny purple beans on my royalty purple pod plants! Things are really coming along. My Purple Dragon carrots are doing nicely and are just about ready. We ate most of the lettuce and spinach though. It's probably too hot out to start any more till later this summer.

Just to add plenty of room for discussion on the merits and de-merits of kumquat edibility, I agree with johnmerr on the edibility of the nagami and on the difficulty of de-seeding kumquats in general but I have found the meiwa to be mostly sweet and with a tiny sour finish. I made a reference to the sweet kumquat (meiwa) a number of years ago and a member from California disagreed that even the meiwa could be considered sweet....I forget her name..(I found it..Patty S.)...she was VERY knowledgeable and I miss her presence. Certainly we know the growing conditions influence the flavor of the fruit but I was surprised it would vary enough to render the meiwa a sour fruit.
