Stain or re-surface a concrete patio?

Hi, hope I am posting to the correct forum. Right now We have a 20X15 concrete patio covered with carpet on which a Lanai/Pergola sits. The carpet at one time was a high end material but it is in pretty bad shape with mold and worn out. I would like to take it out.

I am looking for some options of painting the concrete with some patterns of flagstone, or installing a thin layer of some natural material or stone that will not be slippery. I would rather not break up the existing concrete because of the Lanai.

Is there a DIY option? (I can get some help from my a couple of friends!), I have done some search and seen mentions of acid staining, concrete molds etc. Or do I need to get professional help?

thanks,

Gila
