Using a metal can is a good idea. If you buy the small green twine, it is important to unwind it from the outside. The last on is the first off.

This last twine wasn't wound into a ball, it was long, sorta like some kite string is sold and was wound onto itself. I was going along ok for quite a few days, then the thing just exploded and fell out of shape. I'm curious if when this Fangled, never Tangled can is empty I can refill it with new twine.

Regardless of whether it is wound in a ball or a roll,
if there is a big hole in the center, it comes off
from inside the hole.

I buy the single ply 500 foot roll of sisal twine for garden use. If you pull it from the center and leave the shrink wrap on, you'll have no trouble. Mine is the undyed yellow stuff.

On a side note, I bought a 500 foot roll last year and it was about 6 inches across. This year, I bought a 500 foot roll and it is at least an inch smaller. Hmmm... Maybe they didn't think I'd notice. I should snap a pic of the old roll next to the new roll and send it to them.

Pull from the inside or outside?? Now I'm confused. After all these years, I don't know how to get string off a roll. I think I've always started on the outside. Thanks for the tips.

Farmerboybill - you ain't kiddin'! I was just reading an article "Are Your Groceries Being Shrink-rayed?" about the practice now of packaging stuff smaller but charging the same price. Used to get 50 slices of cheese in that pack? Now you get 48 - same price.

I've noticed this also with at least two products. My deodorant switched from 6.0 oz to a 4.0 oz, I didn't notice till I got it home and compared it to the old can.

Same thing with laundry detergent, the new can is 100 ounces but the old was 128.

And its not like they offer an additional size, the old version is nowhere to be seen an the new smaller size is the same price as the original.

I just bought what "Used To Be" 1/2 gallon of Ice Cream that is now 1.2 quarts but but costs more than what the 1/2 gallon used to cost. Big business is screwing all of us.

Mailman brought me my tin can of twine today around noon! Hey, this stuff is slicker than snot. I couldn't wait and tried it out by tying up three huge, 7' X 3' wide bunches of prairie sunflowers in the orchard (with a couple of stakes). One thing I learned right off the bat - don't take out more than you think you need before cutting it cause you can't stuff it back in the can. But I just slipped the can under my left arm, and it kept both hands free to tie, ect. No fumbling or the need to stop and unwind from a roll.

I feel just like a British gardener now, the product is made in Scotland according to the label.

By the way, I contacted the Koch Company and they sent me another roll that was the size of the bigger one for free. They said they had some smaller rolls go out and didn't get them back in time on a recall. I'm very happy with the outcome.

So if you hadn't contacted Koch they wouldn't have owned up to the smaller rolls being recalled? Or did they send out notices to all customers who bought them? Anyway, I'm happy too that you got another roll FREE! Sometimes you just gotta make some noise, and most companies don't like to lose good customers.

I don't think they went beyond recalling them from retailers. With it not being a safety issue and the low cost, I'm sure they're just sending rolls out to people who contact them and leave the ones who didn't notice slide. I know I paid less than 10 bucks (pry closer to 5) for 500 feet

You'll have to keep that tin and buy the Koch twine next year, if it'll fit in that nifty can. I use mine to let the pole beans grow up. This year, I ended up using it to pull up and support my sweet corn when it blew down. The stuff is surprisingly strong. I thought I was gonna hafta buy a roll of 16000 round baler twine but this single ply did it.

Hey farmerboy, now I don't want to hijack school's old-fashioned, new-fangle never-tangle twine thread, but...I saw a picture of the pole bean structure that you built... (where you had those wonderful looking purple beans, that you don't know the name of, growing. grin) One question, if I may, the bottom of the twine, is it just laying on the soil awaiting the beans to start climbing it? or do you have it anchored down somehow? I start putting the twine on when I can tie it right to the plant. Every other plant or so gets a piece of twine and 2 or 3 grow up each strand. This is only my second year and I'm still tweaking. I'm gonna try for a lower population next year and see if that'll prevent some issues I'm having this year.

With great respect to schoolhouse and her new fangled twine can, I thought I'd share this picture. The idea came from schoolhouse's twine can, however. Didn't want to waste the empty Oxi Clean container. Works great and I'm taking the twine from the center of the roll. Plus, I can leave it in the garden and it won't get wet. Thanks, schoolhouse.

Hey, I thought of that, but that Nutscene can was so darn purdy. ha. You can bet when the string runs out, I'll recycle the can with new twine. That is, if the lid comes off - I haven't checked that yet. Gulp. And, yes now I know: pull the string from the CENTER of the roll.

You know, you are probably right about selling them at the farmer's market. Wish now I had saved all the Oxi Clean containers over the years. Good ole hindsight.

This is the one-pound can. I rarely buy bigger because how much laundry does one old lady have to do? By the way, I was able to make the neatest hole in the container top with the tool that is used to make holes in the main line tubing of my drip irrigation system. Ain't it fun?

I use Oxi Clean for my white bed linens. Got rusty country water don't cha' know. Aulani asks: "because how much laundry does one old lady have to do?" My mom and I were just saying the other day we never buy new clothes anymore, just wear the same stuff over and over. I do laundry everyday. Hey, why get all dolled up then have to change to go work outside, then come in and change again, then back again. Ugh!

The tool you used made the perfect size hole in that lid, didn't it? I got cans full of old nails down in the barn, I suppose they would work if a person found the right size.
