where to buy plants in florida?

Hi, I am taking a short trip to Florida soon. Visiting friends and attending a wedding, so won't have much time for shopping, but I was wondering if any one could recommend some places to shop for houseplants, succulents, cacti? I will be staying in Hudson, which is north of Tampa and in St. Pete.

no places to reccomend. but as a houseplant/tropical nut, i'm sure you'll run into some wonderful places down in FL. takes lots of pics!

Well, I had hoped to take in some of the beautiful gardens that I've seen in the past, but probably won't have the time for that this trip. So I hope to bring back a nice souvenir plant anyway.

deereyebrow, my zone 3 summers generally are not overly hot, though there are exceptions. In my experience, if kept well watered, the large flowered types take the heat in stride and I believe it's no different for the sieboldii's As for other top favorites of mine, here's some in no particular order: Perle d'Azur Marie Cornelia ... a very nice small flowered white, though blooms on this one can be rather easily damaged Romantika ... a beautiful variety, though mildew prone Viola Barbara Harrington Prince Charles Victoria Jackmanii Superba Semu Princess Diana nhbabs ... snowfall in my region is rather reliable with constant coverage being commonplace, this is very beneficial when bitter cold descends. Other than being deeply planted (4 inches down and about 8 inches away from the cement foundation) the plants are not given any extra winter protection other than what snow might fall upon them. I do not hill them up with soil for winter, as the root zone is warm and this would cause tender new growth to push up through the mound of soil. As a side note, I've been growing clematis for nearly 35 years and have never noticed any problem associated with being planting near to a cement foundation, at least that's been my experience. It may no longer be available. You could contact the University of Florida and ask. Marvin Integrity - Where to buy - Central Florida

Thanks for the input. We finally received a quote from the local rep after contacting Marvin corporate. There is a longer story here but won't go into that. The short version is that we are in Central Florida and only Window Classics sells Marvin here. I contacted Coastal Sash but was told they would not sell to Central Florida. Guess they dont want to get into each others territories. There are a few other retailers but they just end up getting bids from the local rep here in the region. Deb - if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for your windows? Was it the Marvin product or the dealer that contributed more to your good experience? Received a bid on Andersen 400s that were about the same price but given everyone's comments here we are more interested in Marvin Integrity. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. We are buying 33 windows total - 5 casement, other double hung, plus 4 french doors w/ transom glass, 2 single doors w/ transom class, plus one other french door no transom.

depends on where in Florida you are! It's a pretty big state. If you're in the miami area, fairchild tropical gardens is a great place to visit but they have little for sale.
I've found that local nurseries, and the big box stores carry a lot of what we northerners (me) go crazy for, at very cheap prices compared to what we see at home.
If you are anywhere near Homestead / Redlands / south west of miami there are a lot of wholesalers who are very gracious to retail buyers. I've bought orchid tree seedlings for $1 or calla or caladium bulbs for 25 cents each! the prices seem to vary with how much the grower likes you. The bauhinia orchid trees are spidermite magnets but make a very pretty outdoor pot specimen for a couple of years if you have a place to overwinter them.

Elsier, you could try posting this on the florida forum, lots of great members there that probably can recommend some great places. One place comes to mind is Jene's tropicals in st. petersburg. Never been, but planning a trip soon, is USF(Tampa) botanical garden store, heard they have some nice plants.

Have a great time, weather is getting hot here, already in the upper 70's to 80's...bring sunscreen!

I'm not from St. Pete so I can't be specific, but you can find plants at any of the big box stores or discount stores. You could also look in the yellow pages for garden nurseries when you get to St.Pete.
If you had time, I would really recommend Tropiflora in Sarasota and also Selby Gardens.

elsier, I googled: plant nurseries in Hudson Florida and found a list of places, with addresses and telephone numbers. Come down and spend some money; it looks as if the State will need it!

Hi, just returned from above-mentioned trip. While in St.Pete, I took a look at Jene's Tropicals recommended by pglvr1. (Thanks again, puglvr1!) Lots of wonderful plants! They recommended I also check out a sister store, owned by a relative, I think called Log Cabin. It was located less than a block from the first store, so I went there as well.
At the second store I purchased two nice Sansevieria plants to add to my collection.
Also, the family friends we stayed with have an atrium with many tropical plants and I brought home three cuttings from them.
Next time, less luggage and more room for plant souvenirs! Much better than a T-shirt!
