"Kanza" would be a good choice for a pollenizer for Pawnee;
Pollen-shed/nutlet receptivity patterns for Pawnee and Kanza are compatible - Pawnee has early pollen shed and late nutlet receptivity, while Kanza has early nutlet receptivity and late pollen shed.
Kanza was bred & released by the USDA Pecan Breeding program for planting in the northern/midwestern pecan belt, so it'll handle your NC temps without a shrug. Additionally, it's a scab-resistant cultivar that produces a high quality nut.
Like many others, my friends at NRNTN are sold out for 2009, but if you'd care to go ahead and place your order for 2010, one year isn't gonna set you back THAT much.

Pawnee is supposed to be iffy for my area, but I wanted to try it for the nut size. As to sources....there I don't know. Are there any pecans in your area? I was surprised to find that native pecans are about the most common tree I have on my 10 acres because this area of Missouri is not known for them. Of course the nuts from these trees are very small, but I expect they will serve to pollinate my trees.

I have five grafted trees, two each of Pawnee and Peruque and one Colby, all of which came from the Forrest Keeling Nursery. I don't know if they will sell to the general public. I got my trees through a pecan orchard located in the Missouri pecan capital west of me, and one directly from Forrest Keeling when they had a display at a university sponsored nut festival. All of these trees have done well, and three are really doing well. They were planted in 2004, and there were two nuts each on the Colby and one of the Peruques last year, which is relatively early I think. You might try contacting Forrest Keeling to see what they can do. They grow their grafted trees in the bottomless pots and the trees have a really nice dense root structure as a result.

Chuck makes a good point - if there are other pecans - native seedlings or just a good mix of named varieties - in your neighborhood - like within a half-mile or so, you may not even need a second variety. But, you can never have too many pecan trees!

Peruque is a great little nut - if you can beat the weevils and bluejays to any of them. It's small, but has a very thin shell and excellent kernel quality. But - its pollen-shed/nutlet receptivity is comparable to Pawnee, and as such, won't likely do an adequate job pollenizing Pawnee.
Colby would work fine as a pollenizer for Pawnee, as would Chetopa, but overall, I like Kanza better for nut quality, precocity, and annual bearing.
I think FKN has offered Kanza in the past, and if you can get grafted trees grown in their 'RPM' process, you'll have minimal transplant setback compared to what we typically experience with bareroot pecans.

I got lucky last year. The MO conservation department sells trees and some other plants really cheap to MO citizens for planting in the state. They always have pecans, but they are probably just the native trees and unlikely to produce good sized nuts. Last year they had some seedlings from "named" varieties...Peruque, Posey, Mullahy and Colby. Now, as seedlings they may or may not produce the good nuts, however I got 5 Peruque and 10 each of the other varieties for about $20-30. I only planted 14 on my own property, giving some to friends and losing a few which I had heeled in waiting for transplanting, but I figure some of those I got in the ground are likely to make me happy in a few years.
