fall harvest suggestions

I am starting to plan a fall harvest for the first time and am wo.during what people would suggest for my area. Can I go by burpees growing calendr, is it reliable? I was thiking of trying;

Peas, radish, beets, turnips, broccoli, kohlrabi, and Brussels sprouts. The last two I am unsure of. Can anyone suggest crops that would do well and their favorite variety.

I was about to post the same thing. I do want to do some early but I don't want them to die if I wait to plant them

I'm in your area, on the north shore of MA on the coast (maybe a little warmer)and last year I grew broccoli, beets, different types of greens, cabbages and radishes. I have never tried peas or kohlrabi. I did have a brussel sprout plant, but I planted it in June. I think if you put one in now it would do well, but the fall might be too late. I'd start the seeds for broccoli and maybe kohlrabi now (I started all my fall brassicas last week in starter pots). It's hard to find starts at nurseries in the late summer. I think the time to get things in the ground in our zone is around August 15 or a little earlier. The sun pattern changes and sometimes the garden doesn't get as much sun in the fall.

The thing with planting seeds now is the heat. Most of the seeds you want to plant germinate in cool weather. However if you want to try use any of the cheap seeds that you think will work. When I grew a cutting garden I had some perennials, chosen for their height of stem and blooming times, so there was something always in bloom. I also planted things like cosmos, calendula, babies breath, zinnias and anything else I thought might look good in a bouquet. I used leaves of hosta and the fern leaf of cosmos and any other plants I happened to have as fillers The thing about cutting gardens is you can use any plant except those that close at night.

Maybe the weather will surprise us and stay warmer longer? It surely isn't predictable. I planted some beans and lots of greens right before the 15th, they are growing well so far. Contender is one bean I started, it has a DTM in the 40's. For greens, Wild red Kale makes it through the winter well, and I like mustard greens and collards. I frequently leave turnips in the ground since they make a nice early spring green. Some kind of tunnel or plastic could extend the season some, and perhaps make a difference in getting some beans. A problem I have had is that when fall starts, often the weather changes dramatically to colder and wetter and shuts down the plant growth.

Katie, You can grow almost everything in fall that you grow in spring and summer as long as you choose short-season varieties that will have a chance to produce before cold weather wipes them out. You omit a lot of helpful information as to your intent for growing fall tomatoes. If you want to achieve peak harvest potential of a variety that usually has a flush of earlier fruit (Determinate types) than you need to find out the typical days to maturity of that variety and count backwards from transplanting date. Typically you don't need as much pre-transplant growth in this instance-- 4 weeks should be plenty. Cold weather will not hinder transplant date but hardening off will be more important to temper tender seedlings to brutal midsummer heat. I'd even suggest you move seeded packs directly out in a sunny location where you can care for regularly from the start. As you do your date calculations keep in mind that many varieties will start producing slowly, reach peak production in another 4-6 weeks and then drop off over an additional 4-6 weeks. You don't want frost to abruptly end production just as plants are peaking.

Thanks. I plan on planting the Brussel sprouts, broccoli, and kohlrabi inside within a few days. We will see how it goes. Nothing to lose really.

I'm in MA, and I never had any luck with fall peas. Just as they're getting ready to produce, the days are getting short and they just don't thrive. The temps are right, just like the spring season, but in the spring the days are getting longer just as the plants really need the energy. Maybe others have better luck than me.

I should have added that beets, beans and cucumbers can all be planted now for a late harvest.

I just found a fall seed starting calculator from Johnny's seeds. If you click on fall-planting calculator, and change the first frost date to what yours is, it's helpful. According to this, I'm behind, as usual. I found this useful.

Thanks. I made a quick excel spreadsheet to figure out my plant dates. I got the days to maturity off of the packages added 14 days to each one then subtracted that from the first frost date. The average first frost date where I am planting my fall crops is Oct 21st. I was planning on planting on Mon 7/30 but after figuring these out I am unsure. I already have the broccoli planted and will plant the carrots when the seeds get here on Monday, but should I wait to plant the rest? This is what I came up with, does it seem right?

Beets: 8/3
Broccoli: 7/14
Carrots 7/24
Collards: 8/13
Kale: 8/8
Kohlrabi: 8/8
Lettuce 8/3
Bok Choi: 8/18
