Has anyone tried this yet?

Hello to everyone,

I am a newbie to using hypertufa but I am hooked. This forum is definitely inspirational. My first question is I am planning on making a dog house that resembles a Hobbit's home from the movie Lord of the Rings. I want it to visually meld into the backyard... has anyone used wire mesh or something similar to strengthen their tufa with? Also I found a product called Muddle... a hypertufa mix...has anyone used this? If so, where did you purchase it from? Here's their website... www.muddleart.com

I have used wire hardware cloth in making troughs in some of my classes. It works well if the mix is rather "dry" to minimize the tendency for the mix to fall off the vertical walls. I have never use it for anything as large as you plan. Try making a smaller trough first to get the feel for it. I also made a small "Adobe" house using the wire cloth. The gable roof was made in one piece and colored different than the house. The mix used made it appear like adobe without separate brick marks.

I second fred on the dryish tufa with the wire mesh

I actually use chicken wire to help the tufa have something to cling on to when doing long vertical surfaces, such as the wall on your dog (hobbit) house. You wante a peanut butter consistensy... something that wont run, but will also not crumble.

Also, if you want the "hobbit" house effect, I found out, by accidentally using too much dye, that the dyes from Olde World (particularly terracotta and the bright yellow-rust color) will give you that effect. And it wont wear out with time.

As far as the pre-mix, I don't know if it'll be easier and cheaper to just buy your portland (white), sand and peat on your own. It's not that difficult to mix, although, a doghouse will involve a LOT of mixing.

You're going to want rounded edges, so I'd probably dress an existing structure so you will have something lighter that also requires less tufa

Yes Hormel makes tasty nitrate preservative free lunch meats too...Costs more...but taste delish...bacon as well... And Jimmy Deam makes a delish Natural sausage in "hot" and regular. I use the hot for pizza or breakfast. and then there is this other brand of hotdogs and polish or smoked sausage I buy that is Gluten Free and nitrate free. Bistro Naturals by John Morrell. another one to check on is Dietz and Watson...Albertsons Deli carries it. Applegate Farms (carried at Trader Joes and other "natual" grocery stores.

Everyone...take 10..put everything in prospective..this all started because I recommended pure oxygen bleach as opposed to a product containing mostly sodium carbonate. ..May you are correct that I didn't ask first why that person didn't buy the more pure form..I didn't think to ask that..I was only suggesting a better product IMO. I am sorry i rub you the wrong way May, I've looked back on past posts and realized...I'm not sure how to word it but I've always had the feeling I bug you..that's ok. Maybe I said something you didn't like or agree with, it doesn't really matter. I will say that up there^^^^ when I suggested someone cut to the chase and buy pure sodium percarbonate, I felt like you belittled me for saying it..you ask why I slam oxi boosters, as if I've done something wrong voicing my opinion on the added washing soda to it..am I not allowed to voice my opinion on a product because it might hurt someone's feelings..I was after all respectful, I did not slam a person, I told of my dislike of a product and why. I still can't understand how all of this happened, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I voiced an opinion on a product and that's that..last night I got a bit emotional over this, I was ready to bail out, but I thought about it..if I run out on this forum because someone doesn't like my views on a product..well that's just silly. I'm staying, everyone will not like the products I use, I won't like every product someone else uses, but I will voice my opinion as I would expect in return. And I hope that everyone knows that just because I don't like a product they may use doesn't mean I think less of that person..I don't judge someone on their laundry products. May, my apologies to you for whatever I've said in the past that upset you..I hope you will accept my apologie. And I hope this whole thing can be dropped and put in the past life is short.

Helooooo friends! Here’s my total failure in air layering: I don’t know why, but all 8 branches failed. I applied rooting hormones on cuts, wrapped them with sphagnum moss and coco coir, I kept media moist with some rooting hormones as well, and.... nothing. Nada. Not even one scrawny root! To stay on a positive note, I’m glad that I didn’t kill those branches. Well, I have to take it back... I killed them other way. When I tried to root them as a cuttings, lol. 90% of those crocked, and a few still hanging in there, but again, no roots or signs of new growth. I’m kinda blaming it on weather, our April and May was cooler than winter! So I’m thinking I should try it again when weather will be warmer. All this torture was done indoors, and I’m thinking of taking my cuttings outside at least during a day. Nights are still 48-51 here. Forgot to mention, some of them in perlite/coir mix, some in perlite. And one in water with root hormone. I did water them tho.... didn’t know till yesterday that cuttings needs to be in dry media. Ugh.... Probably will kill the rest of them soon, lol.

I have played around with hypertufa and concrete sculpture using sytrofoam wrapped in chicken wire as a base. It has held up fine. I don't know how big your dog is (smaller than our Lab I hope), but your hobbit will no doubt need some support other than hypertufa. Maybe a rigid foam board covered with the wire and tufa would work. Good luck!

gord_nm beat me to it. Styrofoam is completely stable as long as no UV light hits it. It also provides good insulation. The wire mesh with cement (ferrocement) can be remarkably strong.

This doghouse could wind up being a permanent structure.

...old pos, but for information sake. Check out how some of the monolithic dome homes are done.

I'd recommend some rebar, with hardware cloth or something similar over it... then apply your mix to both sides.
