can anyone id this bug

i have had these bugs for the past two years, i have not seen them yet this year but i was wondering if anyone can identify them for me so if i do get them again than i will know what i am dealing with. in past years they completely killed all my squash, pumpkins, cukes, basically anything they can crawl on and eat. i was thinking maybe they are the young svb?? because i did have those last year as well. i spent many hours searching for this little guys identity last year. i even contacted several horticulture programs and nobody knew. any ideas. thanks. sarah

i know the picture isn't the best, but it is the little yellow fuzzy thing in the middle

I see a bad infestation of aphids but can't really see a "bug" due to focus problems. The prickly sticker or the black and green thing? I'd guess that what ever it is it appears to be feasting on all the aphids. You might do a search for aphid predators - there are many - and see what that pulls up. ;)

It's not SVB or SVB larvae... have not seen yours anywhere that I can remember.

If that's an aphid, I haven't seen one before. They looked like tiny spiders almost, I thought it might be baby spiders. I have been gardening at this same location for 25 years too. Maybe that is why I never see a lady bug. [g] That was the other thing I had wondered about, whether now that I had them, whether they would perpetuate themselves? Do they winter over in leaf litter or in the ground? We are planning on ripping out and mulching over that whole bed this fall. I also wondered if they are attracted by anything in particular? That was milkweed that they were all over. Thanks :-)

Springtails (if that's what you have) are generally of no harm to the plant. They feed on dead plant material, usually at the soil surface and will much prefer to munch on the peat in the soil mix than living plant tissue. Treating to kill them is likely to be harder on your plant than simply leaving things as they are. I wouldn't worry about them too much. I see them at times with my plants, and I've seen them in other people's plants. They seem to come with the territory. Mark

Def sounds like red spider mites. I just battled them myself. Had to cut down & throw away all my glads along the back of the house (and they were still blooming :( as well as columbines and a few other things. They got on some brugs, and I have been spraying every 3 days with hot soapy water, all over the plants. They squish very easily, so what I have been doing is spraying and then gently rubbing the tops and undersides of the leaves making sure they get squished and the whole surface is covered. Then rinsing a couple hours later. Seems to be working. They didnt seem to do any damage to any buds or blooms, just sucked the foliage real good and made it yellowish. I got scared my new brugs had Mosaic, but it turned out it was just the mites. Save the Sevin for harder to fight pests and just use the soapy water (dish deterg) for now. It's alot cheaper and it works. If I were you I would spray the plumies just as a precautionary measure. I have been spraying plants that arent affected yet..just in case. Good luck!

Even though Cotton Stainers look much like Jadera bugs , they are two different species . The Cotton Stainer is fairly rare in Central Florida and found primarily in Cuba , Homestead and Key Largo . no idea what the little yellow fuzzy thing in the middle is can't focus on it

my question was the yellow fuzzy thing, i had them all over my squashes last year... i couldn't get a clearer picture tho and couldnt find anything on the web that even resembled them. i have been gardening for 8 years now and last year i learned about the destruction bugs can do. thus far i had been lucky i guess cause i didn't even know they could do this. i am ready this year tho and have taken aid from bug stop spray from spectracide, i have always been against chemicals but this one is less harmful as you can same day harvest all your veggies and so far it has done the trick. does anyone think this is the young stage of something or is it just a prickly caterpillar of sorts? any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. sarah
