Huge bug ran down hole under peach tree

I know this is not very informative, but a huge, earthworm-colored bug ran down a hole in the earth adjacent the tree trunk. The hole was as large as my pinky finger. I was clearing shredded redwood bark away from the trunk of my 4-year-old standard Indian Blood peach, and apparently disturbed him.

I only got a glimpe of it, so I have no idea what it is. I doubt it can be up to anything good under my peach tree.

This couldn't be a peach tree borer, could it? I sprayed some wasp poison doen the hole, as it was all I had handy. I dug around looking for perpetrator, but found nothing.

Should I be concerned about pestilence in the soil?
