I suspect zone 6 is a little harsh for this plant. In Portland (Oregon), the bush will drop all it's leaves if the winter low is 18 or 20 degrees for a couple of days. The defoliation is complete by February. My plant has always re-leafed, re-bloomed, and fruited after such winters. Will have to wait for single-digit temperatures to find out more. This year's harvest is currently at its peak. There is definitely a continuum of habit here: California harvest is long gone by now; mine is at peak, and further north or lower zone, bloom is iffy and fruit is rare, judging by quite a few forum postings over the years. I am curious what counselling zone 6 nurseries are giving for buyers of this plant.

Guava trees/shrubs in general do not produce much fruit for the first 3 to 4 years. It is perfectly normal for the flowers to drop off during their early years of growth. Guavas like full sun. If they are planted close to other trees, they will not produce fruit due to the shading. Guavas are fertilizer hogs but do not produce well with lawn fertilizer= too much nitrogen. I have 3 plants and even if not self fertile no fruit. The animals steal the flowers. LOL. I finally gave up and started eating the flowers, too. They are pretty yummy. Eventually maybe they will fruit. If not I have some snacks while i'm in the yard. *shrug* My shrubs are now 5 1/2 ft tall and I planted them 2 or 3 years ago. I have strawberry guavas too so if they needed cross pollination they would have that. Go figure. Maybe it's just a maturity thing or maybe just a timing issue. ?? Barbie~

I have been volunteering at the J C Raulston Arboretum here in Raleigh, NC for the past 5 years. We have several PG, one of which is quite large and at least 10 years old. About 4 years ago it was loaded with flowers and fruit, but the past 2 years it has bloomed but set only a few fruit. Part of the problem is that the only other two PG trees are some distance from this one, and it may not be getting pollinated? If so, I cannot explain why it fruited so heavily 4 years ago. This plant was selected by a group of hort. students at N C State Univ from a large number of seedlings and was named 'N C State Hardy'. In my opinion its fruit tastes as good as the PG I have bought at the local supermarket that were shipped in from Cal or New Z. I currently have about a dozen 3-year old plants that are seedlings of this 'N C State Hardy'. Does anyone have a guess re how large they have to get before they are likely to bloom? They are planted in 4-gal pots and are about 2 feet tall and almost as wide. I originally had a lot more seedlings, but these are the ones that survived outside the past two winters (plus swapped several others).
