St John's Wort

Has anyone ever grown this as a houseplant? I asked this before but the thread seems to be gone now. I have this nice version called Brigadoon, which in the right shady conditions is a nice shade of orange. I suspect if it does do well indoors it would be that color.

Drakens, I've never grown St. John's Wort, but it'd be similar to growing any other herbs..if you grow herbs indoors, this plant should do fine..It'd need as much sun as possible, (south or west windows) and not too hot a room. In summer, it should be placed outside. Toni

Is it an herb? I have always seen it described as a low growing shrub, or sometimes a groundcover.

I think early spring would be best, but after flowering would be second choice. We got a bunch of them donated for the GNPS sale and I had to whack them back hard. They responded well to that (Feb/Mar). The bark is very nice; this plant needs more exposure in the public. Maybe if I give bobbygil a small one he will upgrade my sandwich to a combo.

You might check out this link about getting your page set up. It's a good place to start. Can I ask...what do you do with Motherwort or do you just like it's look? Do you like the medicinal value? I'll have to look and see if I can find one for you. I had one last year, but I'd like to keep it. If I have another volunteer I'll message you. Can you set up your messaging? I was reading about motherwort that it's been used for depression, but it's hard to get someone to take it because it tastes so bitter! My st johns wort didn't turn red, why not and can I still take it?

SJW tincture is reddish black, did you hold it up to light to view it? and you're sure of the plant identification? 30% is low but should not affect color. depression can have many different causes, have you identified the cause of yours? it could be that other herbs would be a better fit, depending on the cause. good luck

Possibly Senna corymbosa???? (Never seen it myself.) It isn't any kind of Hypericum.

drakens, it is a shrub.

I doubt that this plant will thrive in the indoor environment. It would need the sunniest location you could find, plenty of humidity, and I suspect that it requires a winter chilling period. Some Hypericum cultivars are extremely cold hardy, remaining evergreen in very cold climates. I have a couple of plants that laugh at severe freezes into the teens.
