Comments (11)Fruitnut, IâÂÂm with you on chocolate; good, not special. My wife though is with you Scott, she thinks itâÂÂs great, & she has persimmon street creds being Korean. It does have a unique taste. Also itâÂÂs precocious, bearing on my 2 trees in its 2nd & 3âÂÂrd years; not biennial. & its about the first persimmon to ripen. So Chocolates a winner. Tony, you talked me into a Nikita. IâÂÂd worried about the size; my SeijoâÂÂs taste great, but I only get a spoonful to eat from each one. But Nikita seems a little larger, & I like unique tastes. At a pear tasting in Houston last week, a guy raved about his hyakume, so I guess IâÂÂll try one of those. IâÂÂm not sure which type he has, & Dallas is nothing like Houston, so who knows what will happen. Seems a shame that out of the 30+ varieties being sold in nurseries, the differentiator seems to be ripening time & cold hardiness. All nonastringents seem to taste the same, & thereâÂÂs only 3-4 unique tasting astringents. Tanenashi & Great Wall are the only persimmons IâÂÂve seen anything negative about taste wise; maybe thatâÂÂs to be expected if they all taste about the same. thanks,...See MoreYates or Prok Persimmon?
Comments (46)My earlier post on this subject was somewhat misleading regarding the ripening of Rosseyanka. My January Rosseyankas aren't ripening in the usual sense of the word; a better account is that the weather brings on desired changes in the fruit's flavors and texture through freeze and thaw cycles. A few varieties of persimmons improve with this kind of exposure - Rosseyanka more so than any other IMO. "Ripe" around Christmas time some years, they're the closest thing I have to sugar plums. But I rely on these winter Rosseyankas because my season just isn't long enough to ripen them in the conventional sense. At the end of my growing season the fruit is not yet fit for fresh eating - I would guess that the same would be true for yours. As far as hardiness goes, My Rosseyankas and Nikita Gift both survived temps of -11F without dieback this past winter....See MoreTony 2012 Orchard photos
Comments (10)Tbuch, maybe next summer I will ask my oldest son to help me with the video. Creek, you are right, sooner or later the persimmons will dot it all over my yard. FN, Your zone probably close to mine and maybe a little bit on the drier side. I got frost here 2 days ago and now most of the leafs got hit except for the ones close to the south side of the house. I think some astringent and non-astringent kakis and hybrids will do OK in your zone: Saijo, Great wall, Sheng, Kyung Sun Ban Si. Non-astringent like Ichi Kei Ki Jiro, Jiro, and Tam Kam. Hybrids like Rossyanka ,and Nikita's Gift. If you want to grow American persimmon for good taste than Early Golden, Prok, Yates, Wonderful, contessa, and Lehman U-20A, 100-42,43, 45,46,47, WS8-10(biggest size of his varieties)....See MoreNikita's Gift persimmon...how do I know when to pick them?
