My First Blueberry

Okay, Im all stooked up now man!!! Just took a stroll through my blues and found a ripe blueberry;) It just turned color so Im gona leave it on the plant for a few days. It is Bountiful Blue and its the first to ripen in Houston Tx out of all the varieties that I have. Hopefully there will be plenty more to come!

Congratulations:) It is torture seeing that blueberry and telling yourself nope wait a few days.........lets see how long you last lol.

I'd failed to notice that you mentioned having Dynamite CRF on hand on first reading. Although it has a higher nitrate percentage than the MG product, it should be perfectly fine and will provide the necessary calcium. As far as the potting mix goes, I'm also a fan of bark-based mixes. When growing in plastic pots, I've done fine with the 5-1-1 mix (w/o lime, of course), but, in more porous containers (fabric or terra cotta, for example), I've done just what Ed recommends and upped the peat fraction to 20% to 25%.

Kev843: When you transplant a large, leafed-out blueberry bush like yours, and the soil is knocked off the roots, the plant is placed under great stress. Stress is greatly increased when you do this with an actively growing plant vs. one that is in its dormant period. Pruning back the top growth and removing blossoms and berries reduces this stress. If there is anything you "always" do, it is to use judgment. If you were able to install the rootball intact into the larger container, stress would have been greatly reduced. At this point, I would recommend removing not only the berries and blossoms, but also pruning the plant down, or you might end up with a large, but dead plant. In your SC climate, the days will be rapidly growing warmer, which does not favor your plant. A smaller plant may be a little disappointing, but there is a great advantage to having one that is alive. If, having practiced on blueberry #1, you think you can do a better job with blueberry #2, go ahead and try it. But you know what you have to do: Keep that rootball intact. And prune the plant down and remove blossoms no matter what else you do. It's worth your while to wait one season for your first blueberry crop. Patience is the name of the game in fruitgrowing. It is always easier to transplant blueberries or any other fruiting plant in the dormant season, which in your climate would be the months of January and February. In the dormant season, you can transplant blueberry bushes bareroot, with no soil at all, and they will do just fine. If you decide to plant more blueberries in the future, look for smaller plants, and do your transplanting at least a month earlier. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

Sure you can. Remember that the birds and others like to eat blueberries. I had to net to get a good crop. Best way which is what I did is build an enclosure so I can walk through without dealing with netting.

gmason has the most likely cause, over setting. This is especially bad on young plants because it stunts the growth. Next year make sure there are a lot more leaves than fruit. You don't need to remove all the fruit next yr, just make sure there aren't too many. My potted bushes tend to over produce even though I prune heavily after harvest and lightly in the spring. This yr I had the best bb I've ever eaten by leaving Southmoon on the bush at least 6 wks after they turned blue. Very sweet with a unique tangy flavor. The Fruitnut

Brady, it seems strange to me that you are apparently in zone 8 and your flowers are not opened, while I am in(or was) zone 6, and have berries on some plants that measure 3/8 inch. there are a few flowers on some bushes that have not opened yet. Any thoughts on what causes this?

I think the whole west coast is a few degrees below normal for this time of year,maybe La Nina,I'm not sure.We're just starting to approach 60F for a high.
These Zones I think are based on how cold the winter temperatures can get.
Some places in Texas are rated an 8,but they get much hotter usually than the Pacific Northwest does in the Summer. Brady

My Jewel, Northland, Duke, Berkley and Coville are in full bloom, three other unknown and a Legacy and a Jaersey are about to open.

Ive got a few Carpenter bees nesting in my shed, they work the patch pretty well.

So will 4 days be enough to sweeten up the berry? I know some say 4 days to a week. I also understand that can vary for different varieties. Anyone here fruited Bountiful Blue yet?

That's sweet!!! The plants look great.

I'm still waiting for a leaf to show up on my plants, lol. Mine will probably look like this some time in July.

Sometimes it seems like TX is hotter in winter than the PNW is in summer, same zone. Zone tells you one point in many that go into making a climate.

I find it takes weeks after a berry turns color to really sweeten up. I've started tasting my unknown from FHN. The berries are huge and as expected soft. But they are sweet and better than I was expecting.

Well thats good to hear Fruitnut! I came so close to picking that berry today. I tugged on it just alittle but it didnt want to come off yet so its gona hang out a few more days. Looks like Gulfcoast is next. The early formed berries have doubled in size the last few days! I dont think I can wait a couple weeks!

I live in Portland Oregon. My Patriot blueberry has just a few open flowers and the rest are buds still. There are not many leaves yet either. My Reka, Chandler, and Bluecrop are still in the flower bud stages (not open at the end). My apples and pears are just shy of opening flowers and my peach finished flowering two weeks ago. No leaves on the apples and pears, tiny leaves on the peach.
