Yes it does. Zucchini are squash and they have hollow stems. Browse through the 100s of discussions here on SVB for all sorts of treatment/prevention techniques.

I am (sadly) quickly learning more than I ever wanted to about these borers. Truth is that you probably already have them in your squash.

I'm getting better at realizing I have them, but still not able to prevent them.

Kind of what I figured. I knew some squash was immune but I guess not mine. I am not too worried. I can plant again and the borer should be gone by the time the new plants take hold. I have produced about 30 zucchini now and can go awhile to get more. I did do a search but I searched for my squash and not the borer. Thanks for the UofM link. It was very infomative

I was very vigilant this year after losing my black beauty last year. I did kill two of the moths and have been preventively spraying the soil and stems with neem. However, upon inspection of my squash plants a few days ago, I saw frass and it's obvious that there was a borer there. I then sprayed that vine with stronger stuff. I was able to save the stem, so perhaps the neem did work.

One thing that I need to do next year is figure out a way to vine the squash plants. I have them in large pots, but when the are prostrate it is very difficult to spot the damage before it's too late. I saw another poster who had cages around his squash plants, I may try that next year.

That is why so many of us shifted to the wonderful Tromboncino (there are other varieties like it). I still grow Costata, Gold Rush, and a crook neck variety. Gold Rush died yesterday (2 plants). Costata has a few left but is showing signs. Crook neck, one plant is still quite loaded, the other shows signs. That probably shows the relative attraction each of this varieties has for SVB. GR has always been a magnet, and I have grown it for 10+ yrs. I keep growing it because it is the earliest zucchini.

But Tromboncino is starting now and will produce until frost. Unlike regular zucchini, is a big vine and needs a big (8ft+, or lots of space for lateral expansion) trellis. Plus, everyone eating out of the garden prefers the unique taste of Tromboncino. So, I recommend growing zucchini and Tromboncino in succession.

I will have to remember that variety for the future. I planted tatuma squash this year as they are supposed to be resistant. So far so good for the borers but now all my squash remaining also have powdery mildew... oh well.
