Potato problem - leaves curling and brown (pics)

I've grown potatoes a few years and haven't seen this before. On two rows of potatoes, the leaves are curling and browning. The ones on the right in the pic below are Carola; seed potatoes were bought from a reputable supplier. The ones on the left are German Butterball and they haven't had the leaf curl (but I did get some yellowing of lower leaves on them earlier in the season).

Do some varieties just grow this way or do I have a problem? These are later varieties that I planted May 13 so it seems too soon for them to be dying back.

As an aside, when I went out to take these photos I noticed one large stem of an otherwise healthy plant had turned completely black and fallen over. Sure this was a sign that all my potatoes were doomed (about 80' of row), I got my trowel and dug up two potatoes from that plant, which looked just fine. When I went for the third, I dug up a toad! Ha ha!! Guess he had made a home in the plant.
