Male/female bloom question

What determines the ratio of male to female blossoms on squash, cucumbers, and muskmelons and the timing of their appearance? Do temperature, moisture, soil nutrition, or other cultural considerations have anything to do with it or is it all in the genes?

The yellow crookneck squash put out lots of female blooms before any males showed up. The zukes and cantaloupes are producing loads of male blooms but the females have not made an appearance yet. (None are parthenogenic varieties.) I'd love to know if I can influence this in any way. Probably not, but it's worth asking.

Sandy, trying to play matchmaker!
