Don't worry about tall, plant it now. If it doesn't get tall enough chop off and start again next year -- you will still be ahead since the roots will be well established this year and it will take off vigorously next spring. Jolj is in SC where its sizzling hot in the summer. For that climate you don't want to plant now since it could fry the plant. For you it should be OK. Scott

I try to cut them down every year, but man do those things grow fast! And thick vines! Some are as thick as my wrist and grow so high up in the trees there's no way I can reach them. But...I'll find a place for the new ones and keep a good eye on them. Thanks. ;) V.

Sunset Gardening Book has a really good explanation of Grape pruning.... though if you are growing them for eating, you probably don't need to prune it for wine grape production. I wouldn't worry about it till next WINTER, when it has no leaves. The first year, it needs to grow and make leaves and a good root system. One of my grapes, which is a couple feet from my vegetable garden didn't get watered ONCE this year... :) guess it's roots grew over to the veggie garden and didn't need me to water it.
