Red spider mite I believe. The link below describes spider mites in general. Note that it mentions spraying insecticides to get control may aggravate the problem because you can kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them (and bad guys always come back first!). They thrive in hot dry environments, so cultural controls would include creating a humid environment and periodically spraying off foliage. Thanks Kim. This is exactly what I found. A lot of my babies have very red new growth. And that's where I found them....Good thing I had my glasses on! I usually find them when I'm showering my roses in the morning. This time I saw them later in the day and had to squish them with my fingers. Yuck, Aphid guts. I see you haven't had any luck yet finding Dottie Louise. I am good at web searching, (part of my job) and if I can be of help, I would be pleased to. Well, I have to tell you about this..... The first David Austin I ordered from Texas was absolutely perfect. It has grown like a weed and is going to be very beautiful. I ordered another that I couldn't get through Regans, and it arrived in awful shape. It was stuffed into the (very long) box and had 5 spaghetti like canes that were from 3.5 ft to 5 ft long. (I measured) The rose must have been in the tiny pot for a very long time. It was also too tall to travel for that length of time (4 days) with no water. The ends of the canes were dried crispy and 2 canes didn't even weather the journey. No more ordering online. I will have to look at the rose before I buy it. I got Wm Shakespeare from Regans, very much past the season for buying container roses, and I thought THAT ONE was sickly. Nothing like this one. Let me know if I can help you search for your rose. Thank you for responding, tsmith2579. Before I received your response, I went to my local garden center to inquire. They told me to spray the plant with diluted dish soap and spray it into the soil as well. They assured me it was completely safe to do so. Well, I did as they suggested and the bugs seemed to die as soon as the soapy water him them. I cleaned it up and put fresh soil in the pot and set it out for a sun bath. Breathing a sigh of relief, I really thought it was going to be all good... Well, I can tell you all that what I did is apparently NOT and I repeat NOT what you do. My plant is now dead as a hammer and I am just sick over it. I have since read that maybe it was putting it out in the hot sun that did it in. I am unsure what happened. Hopefully, my misfortune will help someone else to avoid this trauma. -Frank

CJ, are these red mites on your plants causing damage or in the soil? Is there any obvious damage to your Veggies? Red Spider Mites will cause a plant to look washed out and cover everything in a fine spiderlike web. As for the ants, as long as they're not "farming" undesirables such as aphids or getting into your home I'd just let them be. The Roly-Polys are harmless.
