Platycerium bifurcatum, what's going on?

Nigella

My old staghornfern has been making fertile fronds for a while now but just recently I noticed something odd about them that I've never seen before. I was telling Alicia(Calla_Lady) about it and she asked me to take pics, I decided that while I'm at it I might as well post one here and see if I can get some guidance. The only thing I've ever seen like this is the weird stuff that lines oak tree trunks down here that becomes resurection ferns(Polypodium polypodioides). It's kind of hard to believe that new plants will spring up on the leaf surface, so what the heck is it?
