Container garden soil question

Hi all,

I'm new here and have lurked about before joining. Great community here!

We put in two 4x4 raised beds in our sunny side yard this year. We put in some corn, tomatoes, sunflowers, watermelon, cucumber, pole beans and pumpkin.

Sadly, just the tomato plant, one or two bean poles and sunflowers did ok. Cucumber beetles ran amok in our little garden and laid waste to much of it.

The corn never got past knee high and started to wilt. I was really looking forward to that. Tomatoes, beans and sunflowers and now being harvested, so all is not lost.

My question is this: What's the best soil for raised beds. My wife is sure that the cheap bags of soil we purchased at our local home center had the beetle eggs or larvae already skulking in them. I've never seen so many cucumber beetles in my life.

I've seen the posts about ways to trap these little pests, but I'm afraid it's too late.
