Fungus on sweet corn

The last couple of years when I have grown a small plot of sweet corn I have eventually gotten some ears that contained a growth on the end of them that looked like a large grayish white fungus of some sort. This growth is usually quite large and sticking out the end of the husk. I don't know what this growth is. Recently I even found one of the growths low on the stalk portion of a plant protruding out nearly the size of a baseball. I quickly pulled that stalk from the plot in hopes of minimizing the spread to the rest of the crop. Can anyone tell me what this is and more importantly how I may avoid it in the future?
