I FINALLY got a digital camera!

I bought a Nikon Cool Pix P2 and it is absolutely FABULOUS! I went out and took some pictures with it today. These were taken at the Howard P. Rawlings Conservatory here in Baltimore. Not too bad for an amateur, heh?:)

Hi grow happy,

Congratulations on your new camera! I also have a Nikon coolpix. I just love that camera! As you already know it takes excellent pictures. Those are fantastic pictures that you took in the conservatory. I really like the one of the opuntias.

The only problem with automatic cameras such as the Nikon coolpix is that the pictures can turn out rather dark if the subject is in front of a bright window. One picture in particular that I'm thinking of is the one of the appleblossom amaryllis. This is not criticism. I couldn't take that picture with my camera either without the amaryllis turning out dark. That is why I wanted to bring up the subject of picture editors. If you have something like Photoshop, you can do wonderful things to brighten up that picture. If you don't have Photoshop, there is a freeware out on the Internet called gimp that you can download. It is really a good program! I definitely recommend it.

I took the liberty of processing your picture through gimp and brightened it up a bit so that you can see what is possible. If I have your permission I could post it on this thread or I could send you a copy of what I did. Just let me know.

Again, I'm really thrilled that you have such a nice camera to play with! You are going to have so much fun with that camera!

Hey Larry,

I haven't seen you in a while, it's good to hear from you! Yes, by all means, please post your gussied up pic of the amaryllis! I can't wait to see it!

I've been playing around with some of those features tonight. Brightening dark pics, zooming in on ALL of them, sharpening others...e.t.c, with the Picture Project software that came with the camera. It's a great tool and I'm having fun learning all the techniques!

So, since I also have never done this... Gil, here is the address for my photobucket site... but what if I wanted people to just click on the link at the bottom of the message to get into my whole photobucket site not just a specific picture? http://valleyrimgirl.thenewtonfamily.ca/ but here goes trying to post a specific picture as a link at the bottom of a message ... Okay, I typed the message above and then tried and tried...and the FN kept rejecting it...so by trial and error (many errors) ... -I opened up my photobucket album I wanted to share with everyone in a separate page -saw that under each picture is 4 options of sharing the picture. -I usually use the HTML code when posting a picture right in my message like I do when posting into the gallery. -the first option worked! It is called...Email and IM -So, I copied and pasted the EMail and IM code from my photobucket site to the Optional Link URL just below the message I am typing. -gave the 'Name of the Link' a description...Barbara Mitchell Daylily' -When I went to preview my message the link came up. Hi Calypsogirl, Have you looked at Picasa? It's a free program for your computer and a website that allows up to 1 GB of storage. The program allows you to organize them in folders on your computer. You can add captions and comments, crop, straighten, adjust contrast, and lots of other special effects. When you have them exactly like you want them on your computer, they have an easy upload button which connects to your online account. I'll give you a link so you can check them out. Heh, the gardening centers around here are useless. I asked the one that I thought would be most competent, Armstrong's, what I should do, and they recommend using copper for any fungus problem. I'm leary of copper, having had to write a long paper when I was in college about the Romans and their copper-glazed pottery and their mad emperors, so I'm going to pass on that. That's my only tip of the hat to being "organic," because, really, I'm not opposed to drowning them in Zyklon-B at the moment if it would do the trick. I'm planning to order some Mancozeb from Ebay, because I have heard that mentioned here as effective when Daconil doesn't perform. Mancozeb isn't apparently for sale to home gardeners here in California. Maybe that's actually a good sign. I don't care if I glow in the dark, heh. It may not be obvious from the pics, but I really think I have multiple problems. Early blight, yeah, but Septoria too, (that birdshot look) in some of the leaves, in particular on my Marianna's Peace) and something else where they were getting soft kinda fuzzy white spots on the surface of the leaves. I hate to sound like a hypochondriac about it, but this really did turn out to be a huge cluster**** this year. I am looking at the remaining green whips on my Burgudy Traveler and thinking of trying to go a couple of cuttings. I have tried the cuttings-thing before with nothing but wilted dead cuttings to show for it, but it might be my best option, because really they were the best tomatoes I grew this year. The Druzbas are hanging in there but they aren't particularly good tomatoes. My Eva Purple Ball has already passed on, yanked out by the roots to ripen in my garage because there weren't any suckers left worth trying to save. (Good news... my Arapaho blackberries are growing new canes like crazy all of a sudden... I had just about given up hope on them. The older canes are producing a few fruit, but they are big and quite tasty. Raspberries still to come...)

Congrats GrowHappy.

I love the feeling of having a new camera. It's been a while for me but I remember it fondly. Taking pictures of anything that stood still long enough and even those that didn't. You got some cool pics of some nice plants. I agree with Larry if you can shell out the money get Photoshop you don't even have to get the latest one you can get 7 and do so much. You'll go crazy with all the possibilities.

Hi GH and Mr. BT,

If you don't have access to Photoshop I would really in courage you to get gimp. It is part of the gnu project and is really a good substitute for Photoshop. It has brightness/contrast along with curves and levels. I used it exclusively for working on this picture. Anyway, here is what I did:

Hi Larry,

Pretty good job with it. And if anyone reading this gets GIMP look for the version that was recently hacked to look like Photoshop 7. I found GIMPS interface to be kinda confusing until they made it look like PS7.
