My Gardening Season is OVER :-(

Yup my season is over. Last week I broke my ankle. IÂm on crutches through the rest of the summer. Did ya ever try to garden on crutches. I just took a ride out to my garden for the first time since the disaster. OMG the weeds are having a field day, the tomatoes are in desperate need of tying up, the peas need a last picking then the patch needs to be turned under then replanted. ARGH!

Number one son and hubby have been trying to help but they are gardening challenged plus everyone works 50+ hours/week. IÂll have to resign myself to take whatever comes out of the shell that my garden will be. Assuming I can get someone to pick it.

Oh well thanks for listening and joining my "Pity Party". :-)

Guess IÂll just fly the recliner or the chaise. ItÂs 5 oÂclock somewhere right?

The same thing happened to me three summers ago. Good luck. Ankles are tough, and you don't come back from it all that quickly. But look at it this way, you have a lot of time to plan next year's garden.

why not ask a local food pantry or soup kitchen to send over some volunteers in exchange for a generous share of the yield?
Ditto church or community groups! Hope you heal soon. /Abi

Thank you, Sheila. We used to be able to post pictures to the ARF right from our Flickr accounts. But, of course, if you delete your photo storage account, any communication that might still exist between the two sites is lost! I still visit the "Antique Rose Forum" from time to time, esp. during the cold winter months when I need a pick me up. I don't post much any more. I do love my gardens and my roses and have had many triumphs as well as disasters over the past five years since I did these postings in 2013. Disaster 1: I now have numerous roses that are 15 feet tall/long. 20 feet tall. And even taller and even longer. And I now realize that, although the idea of giant roses seemed romantic when they were 3 feet tall, they have created a variety of problems in my garden and I am in the process of getting rid of all my monsters except a couple of my most favorite. Disaster 2: I have hundreds of roses. From almost every class. And I have lost track of what I have and what I have lost. Disaster 3: Invasive plants: Japanese anemones. Mexican primrose. Salvia. 4 o'clocks. Sweet violet. Blue globe flower. Black-eyed Susan. And even morning glory. I find poison ivy/oak sprouting in my pots, I invite you to imagine my garden plots. Disaster 4: Thrips. And, though, I love every single one of my roses, even those I am culling, I have found after growing so many, that above all, I love my David Austin roses most. Congrats! Good for you. That must feel great. I dumped all but one container a couple weeks ago. The problem is I'm still sowing seeds in extra little pots and old annual six-pack containers. I read that some sow biennials and perennials now so they can bloom the next year, so I decided to give that a try, as well as some ornamental cabbages and kales and pansies for fall. I just can't stop! I need help, lol. My deck looks a LOT better than it did however. I have a mini (and I mean mini) unheated green house with four small shelves on the deck, so that keeps a lot of it out of the way. I do have quite a few pots lining the outside of the deck, but just around the outside, so it is quite an improvement. I think my DH was more than ready to see the lasagna pans go :) Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

We had 5 inches of snow this week. No more (in ground) gardening for me. I just need to mulch my rose bushes now that the ground has frozen. In a few more weeks, I'll begin wintersowing in milk jugs. Once I get all set for Yule/Christmas, I can start reviewing what seeds I need and can swap, and making some plans for next year. I already know what practices I'll try to improve on next year. In January, I'll send some soil for testing (only $10 in Jan!) What is anyone else up to?

Raised bed #1 currently houses fava beans, dragons tongue beans, sugar snap peas, spinach, red lettuce, and kale. It is a little over planted, but I always do that so the rabbits can steal some and there is still more left over for my family. Raised bed #2 has 4 types of different peppers and 6 cauliflower.

Thanks for commiserating with me. I think I'll save my next year's garden planning for the gray days of autumn. But I can dream about fall clean up!

Good idea. It'll take some adjusting on my part, I normally don't let anyone pick in my garden. I've found in the past that folks don't respect the plants and it breaks my heart. This year the issue should be moot. :-)

My condolences but you may be surprised by how much you get out of that jungle. I once had a nice garden going and due to a family emergency had to abandon it for almost a full season. When I got back the weeeds were taller than my head but I was amazed how many veggies had not only survived but aparently thrived.

Last year on July 29th, I fell and broke my leg. I was operated on next day and got a plate and 6 screws in knee. My tomatoes were just getting ripe, cucumbers and squash were going wild. I just wanted to cry. I could not put any weight on my leg for 4 mths. There was no way to get to the garden. My husband would go to garden every morning and gather everthing. I pulled my wheelchair up to table and helped him freeze the tomatoes. We gave cukes and squash away. I know how you must be feeling and it is ok to have a pity party.
I hope you heal well and just try to stay positive, for this to shall pass.

Thanks for your kind words and support. This is just a minor inconvenience in the ebb and flow of life. I'm very grateful for all I have.

Now if I can just teach Hubby the Florida Weave for tying up my tomato plants, life will be good! :-)

Moosemac, I'm so sorry for you. I hope you still get a lot of good eating out of the garden and hope a neighbor comes to your aid. I don't blame you about been fussy about people in your garden. One time we let neighbors pick our rhubarb. They took so much the plants barely survived.

Oh, gosh! I know the feeling, well. :(

I did that a few years ago & as soon as I got a walking cast on...out I went to my gardens. :)

Raised beds really do come in handy. I don't know if I'da had the gumption to try & garden w/o them.
