Can I use osmocote to furtilize vegetables

I am growing tomatoes and eggplant, and would like to know if osmocote or miracle grow spikes will be harmful? being that I will be eating the produce. If so what do I use instead? I am growing them on my balcony in containers,Im growing roma tomatoes and japanese eggplant.

The label should tell you what is in the product.

The osmocote or miracle grow spikes will tell you if they are specifically for vegetables, perennials, etc. Read your label or purchase specifically for vegetables.

Here I will have between 300 and 500 nursery pots requiring regular water through the summer. I have automatic sprinklers to water on a timed schedule. To fertilize with a liquid soluble fertilizer I use a 15 gallon tank on wheels to fertilize each pot. Time consuming and not always done when needed most. I like the reassurance of each pot containing a teaspoon of timed release fertilizer included in the soil when potted. As the summer temperatures increase and the plants speed up their growth they also require more nutrients. The value of the timed release fertilizer is as the temperature increases more nutrients are released to the plant, just when needed most. Can I use concrete blocks to border my vegetable garden?

The type of grass may still send runners that will show up in your garden. Typically after you have tilled, you can at least notice the new grass more quickly. You may just need to spend time weeding through that. At the spots where the concrete blocks are lieing, you may also want to remove the grass there, and then lay down weed blocker.

Most fertilizer formulations marketed to home gardeners are BS. You simply don't need a bloom booster, a general purpose, a vegetable, and a berry fertilizer. Some are nonsense like bloom boosters most are simply redundant. But if an ad guy can convince you that you need all those different ones, it sure improves the company's bottom line. Wrt Australia, I would imagine some of their variety is just marketing and some is because of strict regulations limiting the amount of P allowed in fertilizer in parts of the country. Australian soils are typically very P poor and as a result many of their natives don't tolerate high P fertilizer formulations like a 10-10-10.

There are at least 2 versions of Osmocote, one with a pink jar/cap and one with green. The one for veggies is the green, I believe it's 14-14-14. That's the one you want. The other is something with an unbalanced NPK ratio, like 17-6-12 or something, avoid that one...

Osmocote is the highest fertilizer in radio active material. This gets absorbed into the plant. so if you do not mind eating radio active food and becoming radio active yourself then go ahead. Besides who cares about cancer. Cancer only kills the other guy. It will not kill you.

Please tell me where it says Osmocote will cause cancer from it being to radioactive.

Most everything has low levels of radioactivity. Even humans, yes you and me are radioactive.

Recent studies have also shown low levels of radioactivity can be a benefit to health. In parts of Europe, they have spas with radioactive water for people to soak in.

Cancer is a caused by a mutation of the cell(s). There are many things that can cause cancer, and I've never heard of Osmocote as a known cause.

If we should avoid all things that MIGHT cause cancer, we might as well get rid of anything with radio frequencies (cell phone, TV, etc) and our use of electric. Electric magnetic fields have been proven to cause cancer and if something has electric going through it, there will be a field. Let's also outlaw BBQs and any food that might be slightly burnt because it's proven that charred foods can cause cancer.

I've used the 19-6-12 as well as 14-14-14 Osmocote for years on container plants, including vegetables. There are many other brands of slow release pellets that seem to work just as well. Best method I've found is to be a little conservative with the Osmocote and supplement with a soluble fertilizer when needed. The main concern with the slow release stuff for me is that it can release too quickly in intense heat.

What is this "radio active", two words? Does he/she mean "radioactive"? Is two word "radio active" and one word "radioactive" the same?

The government says sunlight is "radioactive" (Actually, they say that it is part of our "radioactive background".). I would suggest that if radioactivity is ones fear then one should not plant ones garden where it receives any sunlight. vbg. etc.
