flowers in the veggie garden for pest control?

Hello-

I'm a newbie- and I've tried to find a place to introduce myself-but this site is so expansive- didn't know where to begin.

Anyway- I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer for me. I've heard that if you strategically place other plants throughout your veggie garden, that they will act as a natural deterent for some habitual pests. I've heard about marigold- although I don't know where they should be planted. Are there other types of plants that have the same effect? I live in TN- zone 6b. I'd like to put my garden out into the yard next year, instead of my containers. I feel I would have better yield than I have been. Any suggestions?
